This camp scene has a lot of interesting details. Lets start with the seated zouave in shirtsleeves on the left. The kepi of this and the other seated zouaves has my attention. Was this worn in addition to the fez? Or are these men NCOs? The kepis also appears to be two colors as the band around the crown looks darker than the majoity of the crown. It's hard to make out the sword this guy is carrying. I thought he might be an NCO, but may might very well be an officer. Behind him looks what may be a small camp color or marker flag. The other two seated zouaves look to be in pretty much the same uniform, with the zouave on the right carrying a pistol. I'm curious as to what the standing figure in the rear right with the slouch hat is carrying. Is it a large knife in a sheath or a sabre bayonet? To his left appear to be two more 5th NY zouaves. The fez of the one in front looks to have his fez cuffed or folded up in a way that creates a band. The portly fellow in the plaid patterned shirt with the stripped trousers looks like he could be from the 10th NY (National Zouaves).I'm sure a little homework with show if these guys were encamped in the same area. The box or chest in the center of the picture looks to have H.Q. STAFF MESS. 5th REGt N.Y.S.V. stencilled on the front.

It appears on the fella, reaching across the mess crate, what looks to be a faint outline of stripes.

Good question on the kepis. These could be private purchase items. Doubt they would be worn on parade. Kepis were a huge fad in the Civil War. Not very practical in the field but cool to "pimp" the camp in.

The fella in the slouch could be a body servant with a mean looking meat carver!

American Zouaves had a habbit of folding up their fezzes and pulling up the tassels. You'll see that in alot of Zouave regiments. This was practical because it would keep the fez snug to the head. Wearing it "French" style, with fez worn back on the head with the tassel hanging low, it would probably have a tendency to fall off on the run if not properly hair pinned.

You'll like this one then.~Gary

I stand corrected!....I've seen this pic before. Note how perfect they perform 'shoulder arms'. Straight up on down. It drives me crazy when I see reenactors do this and have it resting on their shoulder like "daddy's shotgun".

Jason, I agree 100%. I hope too many folks don't mind me posting this stuff. It's the little details like this that elevates a figure a notch above other sculptures. On a related note you may find this article of interest.~Gary
