Can anyone recommend a suitable book which deals with British heraldry, its origins and developments, please? Lots of illustrations preferably, as I only read pictures!!

If you can find it, The Dictionary of Heraldry by Joseph Foster (repr. of Some Feudal Coats of Arms (1902)) (London: Studio Editions, 1992; originally republished by Bracken Books, 1989) will fit the bill quite nicely!
