This is the last figure I have sculpted this year. I have had a very productive year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my faithful clients who have kept me so busy. Thanks everybody!

The bust is a sort of redux of a Buffalo Soldier bust I did over 20 years ago. It was a very small bust approximately 1/16th scale.

The new bust is 1/9th scale (200mm). This was done for a commercial client (who will remain anonymous for the time being) and will be available in the coming year.

Happy New year to everybody!

GEEZ that's nice! Mike, I must admit, I'm a huge fan of your work. I try to pick up one of all the pieces (busts) I can that you have sculpted. This will certainly be no acception! Just great work! Thanks for the sneek peek.

Mike, That is very nice. I remember seeing your original Buffalo soldier many years ago along with a mongol...I think. Those pieces not only inspired me to try a bust but opened up a new avenue for miniature sculptors to explore. ~Gary

Gorgeous work Mike!
Kudoz on the minimalist levators ;)

I really like how you've done the lips and fur (y)

Do tell what mediums you've used! I can spot the green stuff ;) and the hat looks like there's small black flecks.. magicsculp ?

Superb work on that smiling face, the eyes really work well with the expression and this is a great piece of sculpting.

Hey thanks everybody for the kind comments!

The figure is mostly sculpted in Aves Apoxie Sculpt, white. That has the small flecks you see in the hat. This is great stuff and very similar too Magicsculpt - without the translucence. The gray stuff is Procreate. Normally I would have done the fur in Kneadatite (green stuff) because it takes texture so well. I was low on Kneadatite so used the Procreate putty which had been sitting around for a while. It works quite nice for textured areas - perhaps even better than Kneadatite.

The head, as always, was done in Sculpey Promat. I also did some tweaks in putty. The red color is just primer used to blend all of the different stuff together into a homogeneous surface.

Mike,
so you (Do) sculpt 1/9th figures....thats good (for me) to know.
good luck on you latest beautiful (1/9th) piece.
aloha,
wencho

Yo Wenchman!

I only do 1/9th scale heads as total scratchbuilds every time. I do not have any squish molds in this scale. Kinda makes it a bitch, especially when the weather is cold and the Sculpey is kind of stiff, dry and uncooperative. The stuff is so much easier to use in the summer.

Lovely piece Mike. It was good to see you productive this year. Still one of my favourite sculptors. More pilots in 2010?

Ross

Yep! As long as people want me to do them, I will keep pumping them out.

Superb work on that smiling face, the eyes really work well with the expression and this is a great piece of sculpting.

Thanks Steve! I actually used the blues singer, Muddy Waters as a model for this one. The bust is not a good portrait, but I did capture the good natured grin, which was my primary object with this sculpture.

Awesome sculpt!
Love the larger bust as it reminds me of a famous
blues guitarist from the 60s.
