Hi all,

Just finished this guy this afternoon - a Masterclass 54mm (closer to 60mm actually) figure of a 3rd Crusade Knight of the Temple with falcon, painted up in the usual oils over acrylics. He was a refreshing break from my WWII pilot addiction but, Man, is white a hard colour to paint or what ?!

As always, any comments or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian

Nice work, and a refreshing change :) White is a challenge, and there seems to be no right way to do it....what colours did you use?

Ya, where were you today??

I like this a lot. The white looks good and I like how you weathered the cloak to work into the colors used on the base. Ties it together nicely.

Very, very nice piece! (y)
Love the falcon, shield and the weathering on the white tunic!
Yes, we missed you. Hope that you will bring this guy at our next meeting in January!
Cheers my friend!

Nicely done Brian.
It's all been said already so I shall not scatter more rose petals across your backyard ;)
Really a beautiful piece, face, whites, the wee chickadee on his finger... all excellent!

And I echo the others... where were you yesterday? That's going on your record as a truancy.

Wow - thanks everyone for the kind comments! It was a fun project, although the whites were enough to drive me batty - I think I'll run screaming back to the WWII khakis and RAF blues for a while, just to recover a bit:)

To answer Alex's question about the whites, they were shaded with various combinations of white+raw umber, white+burnt umber white+naples yellow, white+olive green (I was getting desperate about now!) and oh yeah, white+black! The transitions were the real challenge - I struggled with getting a decent gradation of tones between shadow and highlight. Luckily, I was able to dirty it all up at the end as I tied the figure to the groundwork by using very thin acrylic washes of a nice dusty-looking light yellowish khaki. In short, I kept messing around, making mistakes and correcting them until it looked about right!

And apologies to the SWOFP dudes for missing the inaugural meeting yesterday - got back very late from Huntsville on Sat. night/Sun morning and didn't roll out of the cot until 30 minutes AFTER the meeting had started - I'll serve detention for the absence Mr. Semenenko :D (and coffee's on me for the Jan. mtg!)

Thanks again dudes!

Brian

Hi Brian,

Grat work - better than anyhting I can manage. White is a #$@#&* to get right...I have a several figurres sitting patiently in the cupboard waiting until I can get the nerve up to paint them - they will be waiting for some time!
