Just about finished the Swiss Mercenary from FER miniatures, but putting the landsknecht to one side as i'm struggling a bit with him.I love painting faces but run out of patience with something that's going to take ages to paint.Best to move on to something else.
I'm selling a couple of busts on the market place that I've painted the faces, but have went right off them.

Excellent work Brian, especially where the faces are concerned. I also really like the treatment you given to the armour, it's very convincing.
As an aside, have you had a chance to try one of FeR miniatures 1/16 scale American Civil War busts? They are a lot of fun to do, and relatively inexpensive, and thus a great medium for practicing painting faces.

Hi Chris
The painting of the armour is pretty easy to do.I applied 2 coats of Dark Star baroque metal acrylic paint. You could use any fairly bright steel acrylic paint, but I really like Darkstar's stuff,as it's really creamy and goes on so well, using a brush.I then mix some lamp black oils with a bit of burnt umber, and then apply it all over the acrylic painted armour, without any thinners being added.I then start taking it off with a large brush, and then use a stippling motion with a bit of foam that comes in the packaging of most figures.I keep doing this until I get the effect i'm after, then leave it to dry for a couple of days.I then pick out highlights with the Darkstar paint and voila, all done. It's a very simple way to paint armour, which suits me fine.If you don't get the result you're after, just take of the oil stain with thinners and try again.By trying different oil mixes you can get different tones on the armour.

I've got one of their confederate busts ,which is a beauty, will get round to painting him soon.

Beautifully and cleverly subtle use of colour Brian.....well done mate.....cheers.
If you really applied yourself you could be quite good at this kind of thing.

Don't restrict yourself to just matt, I'd try gloss, semi gloss and satin as well........cheers Mark.

I like your treatment for the armour, I might nick your method and use it for firearms.
Not my period but love em both.
Regards

i have got to tell you the more i look at the first piece in the pics the more i like it .
