Hello my Friends.
I have always wanted to fly fish and tie my own flies.
Well I bought a fly rod yesterday and some fly tying material.
Here is a pic of the first ever fly that I have tied.
All the best.

That's very good, Ralph! When are you going to try it out? You must let us know how well it works.

Prost!
Brad
Cheers Brad:).
I'll try it sometime this week and I will surely let you know how I get on with it.
All the best.
Ralph.

Not bad for your first fly, Ralph! I've been fly fishing and tying my own flies since I was young so the spring and fall work bench not only include figures, but also loads of fly tying material and my vice. Matter of fact, I just bought a bunch of deer hair and foam to tie up a few hoppers and crickets which will be coming on soon.
Tight lines!

I've made up a few different flies so that I can practice techniques(there are so many:eek:).
I'm getting a bit better at tying basic flies but I'm not very consistent at the moment, that will come in time and practice I guess.
All the best to you.
Ralph.

Consistency certainly will come, Ralph. I usually try to tie at least 5 - 10 of each fly in few different sizes which helps with that. As an example, the other weekend I tied 5 Prince Nymphs each in hook sizes 14, 16, an 18. It also helps fill the boxes when you tie multiple flies at once. Be sure to look at the videos on Youtube for your favorite fly patterns as there are lots of good tips and tricks there.

At the moment I'm like, ooh I want to have a go at tying that fly:),so I keep doing different ones.
I've already learnt quite a bit from youtube and will surely learn more.
All the best.

Well first of all I could never get rid of my course tackle:cry:.
I know what you mean about finding the flies that would work for me,I'm just enjoying tying different methods and styles.
Not sure who you mean to check out on youtube but I have been watching videos by The feather bender and Davie McPhail ..
All the best.
Ralph.

Not suggesting you throw away your match gear , just leave it at home when fly fishing .
I set out on the river with a simple box of flies one rod and thats it , no fancy stuff at the end of the fly line just a simple knot which I loop the leader onto . Don't even bother with a net as I return everything anyway .

My river choice is : Hares lug and plover , Greenwells Glory , March brown , Waterhen Bloa , Orange spider and an olive nymph of my own design
and something black . That covers the wets , a couple of sedges and a klinkhammer special from 14 to 12 on a sedge hook and thats the drys .
There is a few others in the box to look at when things are quiet :D
