Question: Would the gold waist sash of one of Napoleon's Marshalls have any type of pattern on it? I've found several references that show a pattern for generals, etc. but then I've seen some references that show the sash being just plain gold on a Marshall. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jason,
Shoot me your email adress.
I have the CD from Marcello Grimaldo where all the Marshalls from Napoleon are on. Its a PDF file so i can pack it in and send it to you.

Here's Marshal Davout. There is a striped pattern in his sash, but it is feint. Various Napoleonic references will show the marshals with a pattern in the sash and without. Since the marshals tended to dress they way they wanted to, you are free to use poetic license when you paint.

This figure of Lannes shows a white stripe in the sash, also common in other illustrations of the marshals. I did not paint this figure. I pulled the photograph down off the internet.

a very nice comparison between the painting and the figure can be made here.
by doing so one can clearly see the mistake many figure painters make.
in clothing there is no true gold, so use a golden yellow for the sash and/or braid.

Jeepers!! Murat wore anything and everything! I usually end up with a smile on my face when I read accounts of descriptions of his uniforms. You'll have fun painting him.
