If my memory serves me right - I recall a thread about using Humbrol Metal Cote - the does & don'ts about using this paint. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some tips about using this stuff?? I have a few figures I would like to use this on & will be using a brush to apply it!! Dave

Well it was very good at one time but they seem to have changed the formula some time ago and messed it up , I think there are about three different ones now .
The stuff i remember ; you just applied with a brush let it dry for five minutes and buffed it up with a soft cloth, tissue or cotton bud Wish I still had some of the old stuff as you could mix it with oils and still buff .

Ron's - THANKS for the help!! To Ron T. - I think my tin is just the way you like it - aged like fine wine!! Dave

MetalCote has long since been any good.....I can only get it to work if I airbrush it....and that is a black art in itself! :arghh:

These are my favourite 'buff-able' metallics......(y)

Got to say I cant get the mr metal stuff to work at all , and it seems to vanish in the jar ; also what the heck do you clean the brushes with .:)

Another old favourite I cant find anymore is rub and buff "silver" ,
Still got some from 25 years ago but it has lost something ; just like me

Try this....put a small stainless steel nut in the jar when you first get it.....now when you shake it..it will mix properly....once shaken....use a pipette to take a small amount out for use....
It will disappear if you don't keep the lid on....hence take some out...because it is alcohol based....which is also what you clean your brushes with....;)

You are a mine of alternative products Mr Barton....how do you do it.................didn't know you were studying forensics as well......LOL

Dear Water, I have tied with some success using a pencil over the top of the Metal Cote, especially in highlighted areas....... just a thought.

Most important with metal cote is to thoroughly stir up the pigment in the bottom of the can. Just shaking for a minute or two isn't enough. The pigment settles and stickes to the bottom. Use a tooth pick, wrong end of a paint brush or some other object to make sure you have as much pigment in the solution as possible. I use bb's in the tin to help stir up pigments.

I've got a tin of the good stuff that must be 20 years old. Its rock solid and I just scrape out a few 'grains' grind to a powder and mix with a little white spirit.
It still does the job (y)
