Need Info About Some German Wwii Items

... maybe not the two easiest questions, but here goes - hopefully we have an expert somewhere on the forum who can answer this :

1) From what year on was the softshell P38 Walther holster used, was it used any time before 1944, or was it late war issue ? see picture of such a holster
1) When was the General Assault badge really issued for the first time, and to which branches of the Heer was it really issued? Could Infantry have it ? Or only Pioniere and Artillerie ?

OK, thanks ; so I guess a figure having both these accessories could be an Artillery or Engineers soldier in Normandy in 1944.
