It's a nasty, drizzly day here in South Central Texas. Thought I'd post some pics of my Nemrod Stone Age Woman. Scale is a little smaller than 54mm, perhaps 50 mm, figure is cast in resin, very nicely detailed, almost no cleanup, and done out of the box. One thing photographing my few figures has shown me is that the flaws are more apparent in the photographs (at least to me) than they are in the "flesh". This figure, my second, needs more tone variation of the skin, I think. It was done entirely in acrylics. I also notice in the pics that the hand holding the spear doesn't look natural-- I think the spear should be moved out towards the knuckles. Any critiques would be appreciated. How else am I to learn?

Well done Mike,
For only your second piece you have done well. Yes the skin dones could be more pronounced, but I say that about my own too. You have done great on her hide skins and they look real as well. Keep up the good work and each piece will get better. btw....rainy and cold up here in Oklahoma too!

Mike,

I would agree with Guy on the hide clothing, your choice of colours looks spot on!
Are you using direct flash when you take the photos? Because that can have the effect of flattening tones!?
Don't know what software you are using to manipulate your pics, but if you can adjust the levels, that might help to bring back some of the variations.

Agree with you about the spear, If you have the confidence to move it I think you should!

Keep 'em coming!

Cheers

Thanks for the comments Guy and Simon. The skin tones are indeed that flat. I wanted a fairly dark skin tone, and as I recall, I applied a dark base tone and then attempted to lighten it. I didn't add any shadows because was afraid the skin would then be much darker than I wanted. Ended up at a point where I decided to just leave well enough alone, but I can see now that the figure needed some more work. Lately, I've been stripping the paint if I'm not happy with it. It takes me alot longer than my already slow pace, but I think I'm learning to see what's wrong a little earlier in the process, and figure out a way to fix it, or backtrack a few steps.

Simon, the pic was taken with a borrowed Nikon Coolpix, don't recall the model #. No flash was used-- just ambient daylight in the room, and the camera was in macro mode I believe. I didn't tweak the image other than to crop it a little. That's a lot like figure painting, I think-- takes quite a bit of practice to get it right!

Hello Mike,
Wasn't there a series of these figures done and one had the Mamoth skull with a figure too. Just curious.

Guy,
Sorry I missed your question. I was finishing up the nightmare weekend from hell at work when you posted it . Feeling a bit saner now ;).

You're right about there being a series of the stone age figures. In addition to the female figure, there are a couple of hunters, a porter, and a spearfisherman (I have him, and he's quite a neat figure). I don't see one with a mammoth skull in my catalog, but one of the hunters is wearing a headdress made from a bear's head with the cape.

Along the same lines Nemrod also did a pair of 18th century fur trappers, a Huron indian burial scene with 3 figures, and an eskimo seal hunter in a kayak. These resin figures are all a bit smaller than 54mm, closer to 50mm, but quite detailed, and relatively inexpensive.

Guy,

This is driving me crazy, but after my last post, I realized that somewhere I had seen a photo of a figure that did in fact feature a mammoth skull as its base. The image that comes to mind is a viking, however, standing on a skull with two giant curved tusks sort of framing it. Been looking through all my catalogs and magazines, but haven't found it yet. I guess I must have seen it on the web, but I can't think where. I'm wondering if maybe this might be the figure youre thinking of.

I'd definitely like to see the ones you've painted. I have the fisherman and the seal hunter (which I have begun work on). I need to experiment with the water techniques for the groundwork yet.

Hello Mike,
Yes it was in the FIM gallery and also in Lilliput and hz-forum. Was a beautiful kit to paint with the throne.
