Mexico could only try such a character, he enlisted first in the Mexican troops. But Forey and Bazaine, attracted by his personality and efficiency, entrusted him with the organization of the guerrilla-cons in the warm lands, first inaugurated by STOECKLIN Switzerland, where his knowledge of the terrain, its technical commitment and little respect for traditional rules of war did wonders. To the dismay of the generals, it depended the commander who gave him carte blanche. His band of soldiers brigands who were all devoted to him and himself with his long beard, his Mexican-Hungarian uniform brilliant and bizarre and his pistol in his belt, were soon known to the whole army, and its infernal columns, critical Liberals. The territories he controlled, he signed the decrees "Governor Charles Du Pin". His methods were expeditious. He multiplied the raids, executed prisoners, burned villages suspected of collusion with Juarists, eliminating suspects civilians. It was not district and cruelty do not repelled. His head was a price to 100,000 francs in vain.
