Happy New Year all! After a bout of technical challenges, we at long last have some updates to the site, starting with three great articles by assistant editors Darryl Audette and Barry Biedger. Darryl writes about how he achieved the flickering candlelight effect in “When a Bond Among Men Was Forged in the Blood of Faith” as well as the lighting mood box that he recently built for a class in theatrical set design, while Barry illuminates the step-by-step construction of his latest award-winning box “NYC 1977.”
That box first was displayed at the MMSI Chicago Show in October 2013, where we also saw new efforts from master box diorama builder Dave Browne (“The Perilous North Atlantic”) and Indiana modeler Greg Liebert (“Incident at Rendelsham”; Greg now has a gallery page that also features his older box, “Where Eagles Dare”). I’ve also added on the relevant gallery pages some new photos by the brilliant photographer Nick Infield of two of my boxes, “The Cutting-Out Expedition” and “The Spoils of War,” and of Dennis Levy’s latest “Marooned.” These were taken at the MFCA Show last Spring and were featured in the beautiful book documenting that show put out by the MFCA’s Joel Glass and featuring a bounty of Nick’s photos. Prolific Irish modeler John Schley had two new boxes in 2013, and those have been added to his gallery page. From the land down under, modeler and collector Dave Morrow wrote about his collection of pieces by Sheperd Paine, and his “Shephibition” at the Western Australia Scale Model Expo. Finally, a new modeler has been added to the Artist’s Galleries page: Tom Bassett, who scratch-builds his work with Sculpey and Plasticine, and set one of his scenes in an old TV pressed into service as a box diorama.
Remember, we welcome submissions of your box dioramas, as well as news and in-depth articles on all aspects of the hobby. Please give us a shout!
