A turbulent day...!
On November 9, 1918, the German Republic was proclaimed in Berlin by the MSPD member of the Reichstag, Philipp Scheidemann...
.. who with his proclamation of the proclamation of the "German Socialist People's Republic" by the USPD member Karl Liebknecht...
...literally just minutes before.
On November 10, the German Emperor fled from his headquarters in Spa, Belgium, to the Netherlands...
... on November 11, 1918 the armistice of Compiègne between Germany and its allies and the Entente and their allies comes into force...
...which stipulates, among other things, that the German "Reichsland" Alsace-Lorraine (which the Germans had annexed in 1871) is to be evacuated within 15 days.
Although Wilhelm II will not officially abdicate until November 28, 1918, the former German "Reichsland" Alsace-Lorraine sees itself released into independence as a result of the head of state's flight.
The Alsatians and Lorrainers seize the moment!
The state parliament under Eugen Ricklin...
... proclaims the independent "Republic of Alsace-Lorraine" on November 11, 1918!
One even has an own flag from the very first moment...:
The "Cross of Lorraine" that adorns this flag will become the symbol of General de Gaulle's "Free French", the resistance movement against the German occupation of France, during the Second World War...
But Ricklin and his independence movement reckoned without the landlord!
Their "republic" did not receive any political or diplomatic recognition from the victorious powers, because the war aims agreed upon by the Allies envisaged the return of Alsace-Lorraine to the French state federation.
After about a week, French troops of the 4th Army moved into the new "Republic" and created facts! On November 17th in Mulhouse, then in Colmar and Metz, and on November 21st Strasbourg will be reached...:
This ends the short-lived independence!
In der zusammengebrochenen KuK-Monarchie verzichtet Kaiser Karl I.
...on November 11, 1918 for any future involvement in state affairs in the Austrian part of the Danube monarchy - the former part of the empire, Hungary, has already declared itself independent. Only exile will remain for the ex-emperor...
Here Karl's abdication proclamation...:
In Warsaw, as in all of Poland, the German troops are disarmed by the Poles on this day...:
The Regency Council and the Lublin government put all state power in the hands of Józef Piłsudski...:
Poland becomes an independent republic...:
