Operation "Deadlight"...!
A total of 155 operational submarines of all types...
...after the German surrender on May 9, 1945, the British took control of the former Nazi Navy...
... and neatly collected in the Scottish ports of Loch Ryan and Loch Eriboll as well as Moville and Londonderry in Northern Ireland.
Here are the boats that were brought to Londonderry...:
40 boats are taken over by the various victorious powers and put into service in their own fleets.
After removing everything that seems interesting from the remaining captured boats, the British and their allied forces of the Polish Navy start "Operation Deadlight" on November 27, 1945:
115 former German submarines are towed at sea (some of them sink by themselves during towing due to heavy seas!)...
...and sunk in pre-determined target areas around Malin Head, Bloody Foreland and Tory Island!
The British destroyers HMS "Obedient", HMS "Offa", HMS "Onslow"...
... HMS "Orwell", HMS "Solebay" and HMS "Zealous" as well as the Polish units ORP "Błyskawica", ORP "Garland", ORP "Krakowiak"...
... and ORP "Piorun" involved, who use their ship artillery for this.
What of the former German submarines is still swimming after the shelling...
... done by RAF bombers, whose crews are happy about the unexpected training targets...:
"Operation Deadlight" ends on February 12, 1946, when the last boat - U 3514 - sinks at exactly 10 a.m....:
Although the sinking sites are officially kept "secret", they are - of course - well known today and a very popular area for wreck divers and underwater tourists...:
