Hi,
Has anyone got oil mixes for the uniforms worn by British troops during WWI ? or is it a case of a generic khaki colour for the main uniform and 'buff' for jodhpurs/ trousers of officers.

Many thanks in advance

Steve

No oil mixes but if you underpaint with acrylic, I like the AK Interactive WWI British Uniform Base. I've used that as the starting point for all my WWI figures and it seems a good base colour to me. I would then use an oil mix that wasn't too far away from that. Lifecolor also do a set of British WWI uniform colours in acrylic.

I would go for something close to this:

Officers' uniforms were of better quality cloth ( so you could keep some of the oil "shine") but were also of various "khaki" shades, see:

If the officers were wearing cavalry style breeches, again the colour might vary. These are assumed to be WWI although no specific date is attributable:

They could of course have their own tailored version, quite a lot of variety in kit among the officer classes.

The IWM website is a great source of original material and well worth some time spent searching their collections. I have wasted many an enjoyable hour doing this (as you might guess....)

What generic khaki

Try yourself :

and in HEX cde , it's a mix red green blue
I guess it's the british kaki

You know I prefer acrylics too Steve ;-)
But do use base colours that could work & wort testing.
Standard Brit Khaki:
Base: Raw Sienna
Shadow: Raw or Burnt Umber
Light: Naples Yellow

Light Khaki:
Base: Titanium White + Carbon Black +dash of Red (test various hues)
Shadow: Raw Umber
Highlight: Base + Tit White
Note: This lighter one would be one I’d try for jodhpurs.
It’s adapted from Shep Paine’s original mix & one I’ve personally used oils for in past for khaki drill. Can be fun to play with & lots of variety possible.

Does this help mate?

Steve, you could use a mix of yellow ochre + black (I use ivory black) + burnt umber for the khaki base. Add a bit more black to the base for shadows and white or Naples yellow for the highlights. If you want a greener tinge to your khaki don’t add too much burnt umber- alternatively if you want a browner shade then more burnt umber.

Mike many thanks for the list

Here's the rivet counter in me coming out, so feel free to ignore. If you are working on your George V figures, it looks like the King himself didn't wear light coloured breeches during his visit to France, see:
https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060008209

But maybe you are depicting a different visit....;)

wish i had seen this a few hours back, before i painted in the breeches, oh well when they have dried they will be repainted to khaki, will look good together though :)
