Thanks for that Roger.

So now I know what I'm doing wrong,....I need to get me a puffy string tie shirt and leather vest pirate outfit!

Good post, if you do watch the video, this is one of the seagull pictures he refers to by Roger Bateman.
It's towards the end of the vid.

The reason I found it of interest is because I spent probably years looking at flats painted in oil and then tried to replicate it with acrylics and although they weren't bad (probably a matter of opinion :D) it wasn't the effect I admired in other peoples work. When I switched to oils things started to come together for me and a rather large penny dropped.
When I get one of those shirts there should be a further improvement. :playful:

Roger.

I would have thought a pirate shirt was your normal work dress :D

In my view!
He does make a valid point about speed, over result! and trying to achieve an oil look with Acrylics, with smooth transitions of colour! when oils are still here and readily available ?

I remember a 'Bill Horan', vignette ( 3 Highlanders charging), from the 90's, that purely used a 'Humbrol Enamel' glaze. The visual was incredible! But I also remember saying to myself 'Bugger-That'!! How much time ???

However, I have seen incredible work on here that uses all formats, In the singular, as well as combinations. Personally I could not give up my oils, but I will use all other formats to reach an end.

Ps, His take on 'Zinc White', was interesting!;)

Regards,

Mark

:D, Roger. That argument will go on for years to come! However in fairness, the 'Acrylic format', has advanced in the last 10 yrs. With such introductions of the likes of 'Jo Sonja', and also 'Scale75', seem to be advancing in their quality.

The bottom line being, is that oils have some sort of un-founded 'Mystique',. and a scary element to them! These thoughts are completely alien to me.

You yourself, went in and now seem to really like and appreciate them as they are, as now you can see what the difference is! Clearly other's are still yet to breach this barrier.

Saying that, some Oilers, have gone over to Acrylics, Its all 'Swings & Roundabouts', in this game!

High Regards,

Mark.

Personally....I totally agree with his reasoning regarding the pointless time and effort wasted in trying to create the effect of the one, with the other.
I have long wondered why oils have a 'dark side' reputation. To me at least, acrylics are far harder to get a good result with.
It also confuses me when the speed argument is used, especially when you hear acrylic users say you have to use layer after layer after........to get the results we see!
Each have their own merits/uses and weaknesses/strengths.
At the end of the day, there is nothing to stop the use of each with the other. Then, you cancel out the weakness of one, with the strength of the other (y)
