Glasgow 'no mean city'
Yesterday I went out to buy some plants for the garden at a local nursery. Being a beautiful day and having no other committments I decided to go for a longer drive.
Drove down through Ayrshire into Dumfries & Galloway stopping at Wanlockhead, Scotlands highest village.

I keep a pair of hiking boots in the car along with some other kit, parked the car, put the boots on and enjoyed a short relaxing walk along part of The Southern Upland Way.
Drove back down to Sanquhar in Upper Nithsdale.

Ordered two nice scarves as presents for my wife and daughter from these ladies.

and visited the very nicely designed local museum. Very much as you would expect reflecting the farming and mining heritage of the Burgh but some really interesting and surprising stories about individuals. This one really caught my attention ... a real 'Lad o' Pairts'.

I had always assumed this was a fictional character ........ can see a nice wee Venetian scene coming together (y)
Got back home a couple of minutes before the missus who'd been to the city ....... none the wiser she thinks I'd spent the day working in the garden.

That is really beautiful country Del.... Steve, that birdhouse is NOT! :ROFLMAO: Is that a bird door or a glory hole?

I do the same thing when I sling a leg over the bike... pick a direction and just ride. You find some nice spots doing that, good places for a bite for lunch or shops in some small town. What I wouldn't give to be able to ride where you drove today. I've always wanted to ship my bike overseas and putt around the island, or through northern Europe... especially Scandinavia. Maybe one day

You should keep a camera in the car for the next time you go "drifting" (as my mother called driving or riding aimlessly)

Colin I do keep a small camera in the car but I also live with my own personal CSI. The way I look at it, the less evidence I provide the safer I am :D

I consider it a good result if I can sneak a pint in when I've just popped out for a loaf of bread and some milk.

That's been a major change in what I do when I go for a days drive into the country. I'd always try to find an interesting watering hole and have a pint and something to eat. The new alcohol limit in Scotland means that 1 Pint of bog standard beer will put you over the limit. I know that it leaves the system after about 2 hours and during that time it's count is reducing but it's not worth the risk ...... and to be honest I'm not finding it too much of an imposition.

Don't blame you Derek it's definitely not worth it. My wife has just announced her and the eldest daughter are going to the Metro Centre Gateshead on Tuesday, do I mind? Not in the slightest.:joyful: I feel a day of mischief coming on with my Border Collie sidekick. :smug:

It's great around wanlockhead, the mennock and dalveen passes are great for walking. I like the wee museum too, yhey used to take you into one of the old mines, not sure if they still do. There's a wee narrow guage railway in leadhills that runs in the summer too.

I didn't go in, a bit strapped for time but it looks as if it's had a facelift since I last had a look. It's a great wee museum and it really gives a sense of what sort of life the mining families lived.
As far as I know the mine tour is still available.
Just noticed they have a Waterloo Exhibit this year ..... this'll require another visit. I suppose the obvious link is the lead for musketball production ...... but who knows.

Sounds like a great day. Almost as great as a day of figure painting!

Cheers,
Adrian
