Hello everyone,
Im currently painting a lovely 1/9 bust of a English leading stoker nicknamed "popeye"..
I have two questions if I may,

I have the feeling someting is missing in his face.
It's a hard face to paint for all wrinkles are deep sculpted, but need I add more highlights?
Not sure about that .

And I can't find anything online aboit his hat.
So I painted it grey like the box art, but if anyone has more info, that would be great..
Thank you in advance,

Frans

Before hitting up more highlights, I'd say more noticeable reds in specific areas, like the tip of the nose and the center of his cheeks. Just build up slowly by adding a dot of paint, and then dab it with a finger tip - assuming these are acrylics.

Hi Frans

Love this bust ...I would push the highs a bit more but also the shadows as well .

As for the cap ...coukd it be a well worn cloth beret or a civilian cap ?

Moved thread to WIP V Bench for you

Sorry can't be more helpful

Nap

Thanks Nap.
Wasn't sure where to post this question its a big forum! Lol
The figure is great, you did a review on it if I remember correctly...
More lights and shadows, I had the feeling it was missing something but I'm always scared to put to much on a face... I will build it up slowly.
The cap isn't cival as shown now on the pics below, witch are really helpful. ;)

My eye wants bit softer transitions from shadows to highs..with touch deeper shadows and final highlights..good subject...has some real personality without looking like cartoon popeye..

Good work so far Frans.
The cap looks like it is the one that was issued for doing particularly dirty jobs, for example boiler cleaning.

Thank you very much for the compliment and for providing this info! I just couldn't find any info on this cap.. so thank you.
So this cap could be grey of dirt, I might give it a brown and black wash to dirty it up a bit.

More red, I will give that a go too. I already hit him wit some red, but hold it back a bit for I was afraid he would look like a drunken sailor.. lol
And yes he's painted in acrylics, Andrea to be precise.
Thank you :)

Thank you, with all tips so far and yours, I can get back to the bench and give it a go.
This figure is really well sculpt so it does looks a lot like the original photo it's from.
.. the man really existed.
A Leading Stoker nicknamed "Popeye", with 21 years service, Battleship HMS Rodney
So he looks like the cartoon, but has a real personality.
:)
