Bergheil und drei mal Horrido!!! Brilliant painting! Really captures the look of a Heer Gebirgsjäger...especially the civilian shirt which was common with army mountain troops.
Here are a few original wartime Gebirgsjäger portrait photos from my archives showing various plaid/checkered shirts and sweaters being worn. It adds some variety to painting standard German Feldgrau (field grey) uniforms....though you can see the variety of "Shades of Field Grey" in the photos also.
Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but can one of you tell me what indicates this Gebirgsjäger belonging to the SS?
The wing shape of the Reichsadler patch and the little hint of a Totenkopf patch showing?

This was one of the biggest issues that I had with this figure. I think being named a "SS Gebirgsjäger" figure is for pure marketing. The Reichsadler on this figure seams to be half SS and half Army...check the wings. Also, the cap Edelweiss is the Army metal version...the W-SS used a cloth Edelweiss (though early W-SS GJ's did use the Army metal badge). Other than that, this figure is all Heeres (Army) Gebirgsjäger. Very rarely do you see W-SS Gebirgsjägers wearing the Army Windbluse (anorak)...they usually wore the typical SS Camo Smock. The only wartime photographs that I have seen have been at one of the WW-SS Gebirgsjäger training schools....more than likely they were the instructors.
I've been researching and collecting original WWII Gebirgsjäger militaria for over 30 years. In my eyes, this would be the typical outfit for an Army Gebirgsjäger serving in the Caucasus mountains in 1942. He would be a Bergkamerad (mountain comrade) of Young's other Gebirgsjäger figure...maybe that's why he's calling this one a SS Gebirgsjäger??
The Gebirgsjäger Windbluse (anorak) ranged in color. The 1st pattern anoraks can be a dark olive-brown when first issued, but quickly become khaki after a few washings. The second pattern anoraks came on a heavier olive-green canvas. Of course washing would also effect the color. See my postings above with original Winblusen from my collection.
