Question posed here is: working on 54mm Rough Rider and want to apply stripes, tried to apply (major struggle) Nimix photo etched stripes, which seemed too thick and didn't conform to uniform folds, "OR" should I try to paint them. Any help, guidance an/or examples would be appreciated.

The figure has no "cast" stripes on the uniform.

Howdy Tony. Paint 'em, I say. You give the illusion of depth to the chevrons with highlight and shadow. Look at Bill Horan or Doug Cohen's work by just doing a Google search. That peb has to be annealed to get it to lay down.--

What type of stripes are you refering to? Rank stripes? If yes, then consider one of the two following:

1- Make the stripes from lead foil (thin) or roll out some putty. You should have no problem getting either one of these to conform to the figure.

2- MOST IMPORTANTLY, I'm not so sure any of the Rough Riders had stripes on their uniforms. Possibly, but I haven't seen it. Nor have I seen any stripes on the uniforms of the other participants in the charge up San Juan Hill (The Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, to become 3rd ACR, or the 10th CAV, the Buffalo Soldiers).

Have a look at these pictrures.....

Good catch Jim. The RR did have stripes where everyone else did, on their coats. They fought the Cuban campaign in shirtsleeves, and regs said the shirt could not display chevrons. Trouser stripes were the only rank distinctions on that uniform. Ain't this fun?

Steve & Jim; you guys kill me!! Now that's what I'm talking about, REAL information and guidance with practicality - man oh man, you guys rock. A million thanks.
