I'm not a painter by any stretch (figures anyway), I did a quick cast of the sculpt to see how it paints before I finish it. I've only painted a few figures over the years, have yet to finish one actually.

I love Vallejo for modeling, so when I saw the Nocturna line mentioned by a very talented person here, I grabbed a set and got started. These are 1/16.

I'm happy so far, will still try a few other versions since I have about 10 copies. I need to spend some time trying to get a good photo of these, there's more tonal variety than seen here and for the life of me I can't capture the eyes yet. I used a slate blue, glassy eyed looked Oddball was famous for, just need to play around with lighting and settings first. Theres red, greens and shadows that don't read well.

It's good to finally put the wet pallette and Series 7s to use, they've been sitting on the bench forever.

I'll work of photography soon, but for now, some quick, washed out shots:

Thanks Chris, much appreciated, but in all honesty, the credit goes to all you guys here and all the work on display to follow and learn from.

From equipment to techniques, it's all out there. For the record, I'm no stranger to painting on canvas or models with an airbrush.

The biggest aid by far is the use of flow enhancers and glazes with the Vallejo set.

I've got plenty more copies to play around with, but I think I'm good to go on the sculpt.

Just need to spend some time setting up a photo booth.

Super painting for a non painter? Just going to throw my brushes in the bin....
I think there excellent a really nice job.
Very well done. John.

Thanks all, you are too kind.

It's just good to actually be painting. I've had a Jeff Shui figure and some Moebius kits in various stages of assembly for a long time now, but haven't taken the time to get started with the paint in any concentrated way.

I'm comfortable with the Aves, not with the Series 7s, but understanding the paint process can only make the sculpting better so I got off my arse.

I think you did a really nice job. Where did you find these figures ? if you don`t mind. Paul.................

Thanks Paul.

They're my originals. They'll be available as a bust or stand alone head when I tighten up the sculpts and add chests for the busts.

Here's a better shot, I set up a photo booth, it's more accurate to what I have so far.

Hi great stuff . What are using with the nocturna sets . I have both and am about ready to get into them . Your way ahead of me with your painting .

Thanks Samson,

I worked right out of the brochure they included, the warmer colors of the Fairy set. The only colors used that weren't in that set were German Black for the stubble and pupils, field blue in the irises and sand yellow highlights in the hair.

Same for Oddball, just on the beard instead of the head and the German Black Highlights for the head gear and straight black for the headphone stays.

I wanted to work on painting eyes, so I grabbed another Karl from the pile. This is just the eyes, the rest hasn't been touched except a base coat and some natural flesh s a sketch.

Any hints or criticisms gladly accepted and encouraged. I know his left iris isn't round, I was having fits with the right eye and didn't notice it until I got the photos in closeup (I'm right handed). This is only an exercise to learn, so I'll count it as one more bit to pay attention to next time.

I started with a red on the eyeball, filled in white off white, made a black lord and then used Prussian blue on the top half, and Field blue on the lower, then went back to add the pupil. I touched up the white, then wicked a small watery red into the corners and added the flesh on the lids. I went heavy on the area above the right eye, I added base color in a heavy coat to cover an oops with the black.

I'm not there yet, but I like where it's going. These are 1/16, I'm using Vallejo with a Series 7 0. The only additive is some airbrush flow medium.

Any suggestions on what to do next or recommendations on materials?

I think I'll hit this with Future instead of fixing the iris shape, saving that for the next one.
