Hi all.

I start this figure from historic art miniatures.

Any recomendation of mixture to paint this black clothes, I paint with oils.

Hi David:

General consensus is to paint the undercoat a medium to dark grey making it either a cool or warm tone as your preference. Shade down to dark brown/black or pure black (deepest shade). Highlight with brown or flesh. I find lighter greys although not wrong are sometimes too stark. Now having said all that, I've still yet to pull it off successfully myself:D;)

I generally like neutral greys so I use white + black + a little earth colour (usually Burnt Umber). Simple white + black mixtures are generally blueish so the earth pigment is necessary to bring the colour to neutral.

The way that black cloth was made historically could result in it being slightly blue though, so if I were aiming for this I'd probably add a little French Ultramarine.

One I read somewhere in an article by Bob Knee was to add a little venetian red to the black + white mix.
