Hi all,

I am about to paint Ray Lamb's excellent 90mm French Hussar. This is my first time I have painted a hussar and wanted to ask - what would be the best way in tackling the braid on jacket using Andrea acrylics? Should I paint the braid area a bit darker blue than the uniform and pick out the braid in white or paint the braid area black and pick it out in white? Any help in tackling the braid probem would be very much appreciated. I have provided a link the the 90mm figurine in question:-http://www.historex-agents.co.uk/pictures/Pm/fh1.html

Kindest regards - and thanks in advance. ;) ;) :

Hi Donald

Just had a look at the figure at Histoex, nice figure, whats the base blue you have used for the jacket, is it Andreas prussian blue, if so, I would run a fine wash of Prussian blue darkened with a bit of black around the braid first, then pick out with an off white (slight touch of slate grey added to the white) to give the base colour for the braid, then pick out highlights on the braid with pure white.

Hope this helps

Dave

Donald, the key to painting braid, if I'm any expert, is like this - slowly and carefully, so no silly mistakes are made. Then afterwards go over your silly mistakes in order to tidy the whole thing up!
I would strongly advise not to expect to complete it in only one sitting, take your time and enjoy, whilst at the time mention to yourself not to do it again - until the next time!
best of luck with it!
