Hi Guys ,
You have seen the title to the thread........ so come on how do you all approach painting cross belts , I have a British Infantry NCO on the bench from the Crimean period .

Its currently undercoated in Chaos black so using Acrylics or Oils can you suggest your methods and thoughts on achieving a worn look ?

Cheers

If the cross belts are in leather you can use green in your white mix for a cooler color and you can use german camo beige and vallejo rust to give the leather a worn look. If the belts are fabric you can always use Andrea white set which works really well. If you dont have it you can use a touch of yellow to your base white for fabrics. As for oils its the same approach but to highlight you have to do wet on dry since if you highlight wet on wet it just muddies the color. Hope this helps

If you want them to look authentic Kevin I think the best approach for these would be to look for photos of the real thing as a starting point; it's really not about painting white per se, it's about representing the wearing off of the blanco to reveal the colour of the leather (buckskin) underneath.

On top of this you may want to experiment with representing any tinting of the belts from dye washed out of the uniform coats, which was reported by observers in the Crimea and elsewhere.
