Hi gang,

It's been awhile since I've posted here. I took a hiatus from painting when life got busy, but I'm glad to be back at it.

This figure was a treat to paint as the sculpting was top notch. The entire figure was painted using Vallejo Acrylics.

Please give me your opinion...both good or bad. I'm always looking for ways to improve.

Thanks!

John

Nicely finished off John. I watched your SBS on Historicus Forma on this. Excellent job on one of my favorite subjects.

John,
I like your groundwork and the way it is integrated into the base. I get the sense of this guy standing on the edge of a high, rocky outcropping surveying the valley below, which is the ideal setting for this figure. Also, from what I can tell the beadwork looks nice.

Wow!! The painting, the groundwork, the photography. What needs to be improved? I think it looks great. Please don't wait so long to post more of your work.

Mike

P.S. Was the design on his leggings done freehand? Beautiful job.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm glad you like the base as well. I was a bit hesitant when doing it because I thought it might overpower the scene, or look too clunky. I'm relatively pleased with the look of it.

Mike, the bead work on the pants are a combination of figure detail, and freehand. The bead strip down the leg had indentations for the triangular shape. The rest of the markings were freehand.

After looking over the figure now that it's finished, I'm undecided on the stomach musculature. On one hand, it looks a bit overdone and unrealistic for the true physique of Native Americans. On the other hand, it acts as kind of a symbol to the toughness of the warrior. If I were to do this figure again, I would probably tone down the definition a bit.

Thanks again for looking!

Looks really nice! The base is spot-on!

That's a good point! I don't think they had a sixpack...:)

John,
Your painting is truly outstanding. The base is exceptional!
My personal opinion is that the "six-pack" has a bit too much contrast. However, I am not a pro and I am often criticized for my lack of contrast.
It has been pointed out to me many times that you have to paint for your own tastes. BTW, Guy is the best person that I know of to ask about Native Americans.

Based on a lot of good advice, I decided to tone down the abdominal musculature of my Blackfoot Indian. In the pics below, the oils are still wet, so the contrast looks a bit more than it will after they are dry.

Please let me know if you think this is better, or if the abs need even further downplay. I greatly appreciate it, and again a big thanks to all those who gave me their honest and helpful critiques.

Dont know how I missed this one:eek: Pretty stunning stuff both the figure and the base work, I do prefer the second version of the painted muscle group although it still looked great befor you changed it.
Thanks
Tommi
