Hello Everybody...

I've just started this wonderful 54mm Native American figure from Pegaso...

Here are the parts cleaned and ready for assembly:

Next will be skin tones and painting the face/body.

Hi Phil ....off to a good start, can I ask what method you use to get your figure clean before applying primer? Also is the primer applied from a can or airbrush?
Good luck with the rest of your project ....looking forward to seeing your progress....
Thanks John.

Thanks John! As to your questions:
  1. Cleaning the figure - After I unpack it, I just use a toothbrush with some regular soap (nothing special), and give each piece a pretty heavy scrub. After, I leave everything out to dry on a paper towel.
  2. The primer just comes from a can. In this case, I gave it a spray of Games Workshop's Chaos black primer. When that dried, I then went back and give the figure a very light dusting with white primer (spray can from Army Painter) - this was done at a 45 degree angle to the figure. Some people refer to this as "zenithal priming". I just like the fact that it helps me see some of the details of the figure.
Hopefully this helps!

Phil

Hello everybody...

I just base coated the flesh areas, and worked on the face.
Painting the face was interesting (at least to me :) ), because after I primed the figure and studied it for a minute or two, I did not like how it was sculpted, so I was not quite as enthusiastic as I would've normally been when painting it. I figured I'll just bury it under warpaint or tattoos...

As I started working on it, it started to appeal to me quite a bit. I also decided to go for a little bit of a higher contrast than you might see on a figure like this, solely because I thought he started looking pretty bad-ass :) It also took me forever to realize that there is a ring through his nose (which is the black part underneath his nose)

The base coat which you can see on the body, is a mix of Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, and a very tiny bit of Naphthol Red Light (all from Golden Artists Acrylics)

The highlights are the base coat + Titanium White in various quantities
The shadows are base coat + Burnt Umber in various quantities

In addition, glazes of pure Naphthol Red Light and Dioxazine Purple were used in the mid tone and shadow areas respectfully...

The face is not quite finished, but it's pretty close. The rest of the flesh areas are next...

Thanks John - I'm always happy to share any info, so please don't hesitate to ask!
Have a good holiday,
Phl

At last another of your highly informative and artistically pleasing SBS.Will follow this one mate.

Oda.

This one won't be quite as involved as the Chinese General was due to time constraints, but I do plan on trying to get into as much as I can and will definitely cover the entire figure and base...

Have a great holiday mate!
Phil

Hello everybody...

Before my holiday plans later today, I was fortunate enough to be left alone so I could get some painting in...

Finished off the body, some necklaces and beadwork, and some metallics (earrings, nose ring and armband).

Here are some pics of where were at:

Some observations
  1. The chest is a little darker than usual, due to the fact that his arms will be covering it and casting shadow
  2. I have no idea what the collar thingy is around his neck. Whatever it is, it's not particularly well sculpted
  3. I've forgotten what a pain in the ass painting the beads can be...
Here is the palette with the skin tone colors laid out:
2016-12-24 13.15.15_s.png

As mentioned before, the base/mid tone is a mix of Burnt and Raw Sienna with a little bit of Naphthol Red Light. The highlights were Titanium White mixed into the base in varying degrees.
You can see the shadow tones to the left of the mid tones/highlights. The purple, green and Burnt Umber where gently glazed into place. They're really rich and deep colors; they add a lot of nice subtle variations into the skin tones. (And due to the fact that green is the compliment of red, it will tone down the overall redness of the general skin tone.)
While not shown on the palette, the beads (and the rest of the beads going forward), were painted with: Cerulean Blue, Naples Yellow, Titanium White and Naphthol Red Light in various combinations. The claw/teeth necklace was painted with Burnt Umber, Naples Yellow and Titanium white.
I hope everybody enjoys and has a great holiday :)
Regards,
Phil

Hello everybody...

I hope everybody had a wonderful holiday :)

With that out of the way, let's see some further progress...

Since I last posted I finished of the arms, and a lot more of the details - powder horn, pouch, leather straps, etc...

2016-12-27 14.19.18_s.png

The arms were painted using the exact same colors and approach as the rest of the face/body.

The powder horn was base coated with a mix of Naples yellow and raw sienna. - They're tough to see, but typical horn patterns were drawn with pure raw sienna. Once the patterns were drawn in, the entire horn was glazed with very diluted raw sienna (which is nice because it's a fairly translucent paint to begin with), and then highlighted pure Naples Yellow.

The pouch was base coated with Naphthol Red, and then shaded with a wash made from Dioxazine Purple. Once shaded, highlights were then applied with pure Naphthol Red again. The beads and fringes were painted with a mix of Titanium White and Naples Yellow.

The metallics where painted with a mix of Carbon Black and Golden's Iridescent Silver. Washed with pure Carbon Black, and then highlighted with pure Iridescent Silver.

The leather straps and whatnot were base coated with a mix of Burnt Umber mixed with Naples Yellow. Next textures and highlights where made with pure Naples Yellow. The final step was glazing over all the straps with Winsor & Newton Chestnut Brown Ink - some areas received more of this than others.

After all the skin was finished, an obvious question would be, "what about the warpaint or tattoos?" While both are pretty common on Native American subjects, and I enjoy painting that kind of thing, I've decided to leave this noble warrior completely unadorned. This is just a personal aesthetic choice - after seeing how the skin tones came out, I just loved the rich colors, and I'd rather not cover up any of it :)

Next steps are the leggings, I'll be starting those later today...

Regards,
Phil
