I’ve made a start on the tunic and caubeen in oils and base coated the hair. Added the eyes and the flesh is drying out nicely now and losing that initial sheen. I’ve opted to follow the Simpkin print and chosen a dark blue for the tunic and hat following the option that Mick mentioned in his threads when the figure was released regarding it being a “Royal” regiment. I’ve added some reference photos albeit they are slightly later than the date this figure which may be of use. They seem to show the French grey tunic but she hackles not feathers, pointed cuffs and no Pom Pom. My scratch building skills are very limited and I decided against trying to replicate this at the expense of ruining an excellent figure.

I think the last picture may represent a khaki SD jacket as opposed to French grey. Don’t know if anyone can clarify if the badger sporran is a rank specific item solely for the Pipe Major as well.

Neal.

Hi Neal.
Its coming along a treat. The Regiment was granted permission to wear the Gray hackle on their raccoon skin busbies, in 1903 so I would guess that the pipers adopted the hackle at the same time.

Thanks Mick. I was trying to find that last picture, I knew I’d seen one including a piper in a recruiting party. I noticed as well the drum major in the second picture is called Strawbridge. Distant relation to the tv personality Dick per chance?

You never know have to pencil in a tash to see if there is a likeness:D

A little bit more progress. I’ve painted the kilt in oils and the shawl (both still wet) and I’ve blocked in the belts and sporran ready for oils. The wings and lace are just in undercoat at present and there’s a bit of touching in on the tunic around the pockets and edges which I had mistakenly thought were piped until I had another look at the references. The saffron for the kilt is a mix of Golden Ochre and Burnt Sienna, shaded with Raw Umber added to the base mix and highlights in Naples Yellow. The undercoat was a mix of Humbrol 62 Leather and 61 Flesh.
