I gotta agree, the planet has been a great source for me to learn. By nature our passion is one we do in solitary (Pete, stop...I know what you are thinking; Larry you are SO shallow! sheez, you two!), and this forum helps bring it all together in a community. It's all about sharing, and would like to think that I am better person for the friends I have made from this and other forums... :)

This is my sensitive big guy side

Pete, you better be at MFCA...I'd hate to have to hunt you down amigo!

This is a good opportunity to do something I should have done a long time ago, and that's thank Gordy and his suppport staff for creating and maintaining this site. I especially like the ease with which we can post our work here. Though I tend to lurk more than post--a good thing given my mercurial tendencies of late--I do appreciate this site and the general good nature of those who post here.

Hello Marc,

Like thousands of others, I took up the guitar after hearing 'Apache' (what else? ;) ) by the Shadows in the early sixties. I played in several school bands in the various styles which were fashionable at the time.

After a 25-years hiatus (marriage, kids, jobs, the works,...), I fulfilled my childhood dream at last: to be the proud owner of a Fiesta Red '57 Stratocaster like my hero's, Hank Marvin of the Shadows. Since then, the GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) is getting worse and worse.

These days, I play mostly instrumentals (Shadows, Ventures, surf music) and blues stuff (B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Duke Robillard).

I usually play while waiting for the putty to cure (20 minute-break). I also play and surf on the internet at the same time or while watching TV or reading. Sometimes I feel like running a race before Mr. Parkinson or arthritis gets me!

As for the AMSS bust, you'll find many Rubens' paintings (inc. several self-portraits)

HERE

Also keep in mind that the fashion at the times in Belgium/Holland was the same as in Spain: BLACK and WHITE. No alternative. That will give you the opportunity to study how a great master like Rubens dealt with these two notorious non-colours. No simple matter but ain't that what learning is all about?

Best of luck, (y)
Quang

Well, LtCol. Kirk, scouts out front ... I'm not going to MFCA. Sorry, amigo. Guess you'll have to go to Chicago, dude!

To all,
Patrick's right - a "solitary" hobby (no Patrick, I won't tell anybody about that flock of lost camels you were "pushing across the road" in Kuwait back in '91 ;) ) indeed. But here's something we've tried out at the San Diego club: painting parties. Basically, we all congregate at someone's house on a weekend and just paint and/or sculpt. Even if you only have 3 or 4 people show up, it's still a hoot. Besides, we get to see first-hand how each does their work and learn from each other.

Rob, Thanks for the kind words my friend.

Quang, It's nice to see your smiling face make an appearance. Very nice looking guitars. I could not play one to save my life so I'd have to settle for the "dirt nap". Welcome back.~Gary
