May be our Italian planeteers will be kind to suggest something :)He is too decorated to be a volonteer and I seem to remember the text said about cavalry. Earlier picture has seemingly a cavalry sabre.
I have no idea what I was searching at the time when I came accross it. Dementia is setting in, alas.

Thanks alot for your help so far

Just for future reference. Google has a reverse image search ability. If you have no keywords just an image then drop it into the google image search area and it should give you returns on site's that reference the image.

Although I have only got this to work in Google chrome and Firefox. Cant get it to work in any other browser.

Yep, I am on explorer right now and it just opens the image from desktop, I will try Firefox , but I doubt it will work - I googled filenames already, yesterday, hopefull, hehe - but with a name like 32ebb699b513.jpg you stand no chance for engine to pick it up. Needs to be more precise I am afraid. I dont think browser is what makes a difference, but I shall try.

I hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree but here's another, with an extract from the translation.

In May 1849, the Lancers Masina reached the number of one hundred, a good department that is also adorned with an elegant uniform, "Dolman" blue light blacks with frogs, red pants, red shako with black band bearing a frieze made up of two bones cross and a skull in gold metal on tricolor cockade, all surmounted by a plume of horsehair tassel blacks on red visor and chin straight gold metal. Luggage and black headband. In full uniform, the shako was replaced by some with a red fez, was later added to the uniform a white cloak.

Getting tantalisingly close. I think we need an Italian speaker to make further progress.
They talk about Masina's regiment being Lancers of Death, they had distinct skulls and bones. The article Richie gave says Garibaldi promoted him to head of "guides" whatever that may mean - its google translate version

The head of the guides could refer to the Expedition Of The Thousand, just my thoughts. I'm sure someone who knows this period of Italian history could confirm this.
cheers

Same pictures but not the website I originally saw. What did u put into search? I officially declare you a "Seeker of the month"
Still no clue about proper name :depressed:, but - Bingo! - uniform "cilestrina". Back to search engines it is then

Thanks for your help. I have plenty to go on now, but unsure what to call it:) hehehehe

Oh, wow! (Thank you , pilgrim_uk !! )

Just want to know the rank and regiment - will have to read your link closely when home.

well, if I suddenly get blessed with skill to make a likeness like Fex can - I dont have a problem - I call the sculpt by the guy's name. If I make just an officer in the uniform I would like to be able to say what rank and regiment he is - I cant call the work - a bloke in Garibaldi army uniform :)

Hi D,
Why don't you call it
Giovanni Maria Damiani Officer and guide di Garibaldi - Expedition Of The Thousand.
Just think of the name plate you will need for that one.:)
cheers
Richie
