Hi Folks,
This is the Castle Miniatures bust of a Cuirassier, 17th century sculpted by Yury Serebryakov.
While the bust is listed as a cuirassier, I have chosen to paint him as a Polish hussar from the first quarter of the 17th century.
Paints are enamels and oils, while the metals have a bit of variety. The helmet was painted in enamel, scribbled over with a 3B pencil, and then burnished using a cotton bud. For the body armour I tried out my recently bought Darkstar acrylic metals, which I found very good.

Thanks for looking,

Hi Andrew ,

Looks good , nice technique on the armour ..did you do any changes to make him a hussar rather than cuirassier

Thanks for sharing

Roger, Steve, Mortier, Colin, Kevin, Paul, Peter, Ralph and Marc,

Many thanks for looking and for all your kind comments.
This is a superb bust, from the hands of one of my favourite sculptors, and was great fun to paint.

Kevin,

I didn't make any changes since this is the sort of equipment and clothing worn by the Polish Hussars of the 17th century.
My references come from the book "Hussaria" for the helmets etc. The cross on the breastplate was typical of the embelishments worn by the Hussars.
I also have a print of the Hussars from this period from the book "Zolnierz Polski" (published by the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw):-

Glad you liked it Nick.
The finish that may be achieved can be quite striking. A friend once under-painted a helmet in black and, with repeated applications of graphite and burnishing, achieved a near mirror-like effect. I've tried but not yet got there.

Cheers,
Andrew
