A friend of mine passed me this newspaper cutting as possible inspiration for a vignette.

By my calculations 5'3" is 63" which equals 160 cm which would be 4.57cm in 1/35
For the german the calculations are: 7'5" = 90" = 228cm = 6.51cm.

The combination would be quite an interesting vignette, I may get around to it, but if anybody else feels like taking up the challenge, feel free.

I have seen this and similar photos, yes it would make a good vignette, better in your capable hands than mine. Though I have often thought a vignette of Old Fritz inspection his towering Grenadiers would be amusing.

Cheers Simon

It's the old conundrum of scale versus height :
5'9" = 175cm (5'11" = 180cm); so:
1/35 = 50mm (51.4mm)
1/32 = 54mm
1/24 = 73mm
1/20 = 87.5mm
1/16 = 101mm
1/15 = 117mm
1/12 = 146mm and
1/9 = 194mm
However, due to variations in head dress, scales as expressed in mm (54mm &c) have traditionally been measured from bottom of feet to eye level. Although I have used an arbitrary 175cm (5'9"), of course any individual's height is very variable within countries, between countries, and through time.

Mike - generally I agree with you, but in this case there is no conundrum. We know their actual heights from the press cutting so converting them to cm and then into 1/35 is very straightforward. If I wanted to build them in 54mm that would prove a conundrum. I assume that the uniform patches would be standard issue so any of the 1/35 stuff should work, same with

Nap - am al ready tempted, you are just making it worse!!!

I think I may do the sculpting along side of sculpting Marston Moor v2. It may attract the attention if the judges at Telford in November?

Peter

Simon - yes a photo would definitely have to be with the entry.

I have been a little sidetracked by a model Universal Carrier and starting some work on a few buildings for 1/285 scale mini-dioramas, but I have worked on figures - Marson Moor v2 and this pair - just creating the basic figures:
Normally I would start with the torso and pelvis separately but since these figures are standing up I bulked out the whole torso in one part.

I had to search all of my bits box to find the smallest 1/35th scale head and hands, and the largest 1/32 scale head
and hands - a bit of a mixed bag of parts but when painted they should be ok.

In the next photo I have posed the arms and fixed the poses with some Miliput. As you can see I have used a mixture of putties (odd bits mixed for other projects) but it does not matter since all of this will be covered. The next stage will be using only Magisculpt.

Hi Peter

Good to see the putty in use .....you’ve nailed the size difference between the 2

Looking forward to seeing more details being added and of course the paint !

Keep us all updated

Have fun @ tge Bench

Happy brushes

Fantastic, I'm so happy you are doing this it really will be an eye catching piece. I have looked quite hard for it but not been able to.find a similar picture of two WWI German soldiers side by side. One looks like he's holding a giant rifle and the other looks like he has a toy one.
