It certainly was an unusual mascot! As I said in an earlier post I believe the 49th Wisconsin purchased a Golden Eagle which they also used as a mascot.

Dont know if I would like to go to war carrying an eagle, may be tempted to "Liberate" him.

I think I would have been tempted to liberate him also! But I believe "Old Abe" was born in captivity so the liklyhood of it surviving would have slim I guess.
But can you imagine how difficult that pole would have been to handle? Having a large predator flapping around your head.! It would certainly do you some damage!

Hello Carl, Beautiful sculpting all around. Love the soldiers face and beard. I have to agree with some of the other posts, about a full figure. I'm happy to see that it hasn't been ruled out in the future. Carl, in my opinion, this soldier bust appears to be running, and with a full figure, would dramatically improve movement, and enhance your portrayal of 'Old Abe'. That said, this is a very stunning piece, and great subject. Congrats, and Regards, SG

Legs for this piece hasn't been talked about yet, but it is something that will be talked about in the future i'm sure! But it depends on the sales of the bust I guess!
