I am having a real problem painting some of the metal Warhammer figures I have. I am using Vallejo acrylics with an Cornell-Loew? #0 paint brush. What is happening is when I apply a base coat it doesn’t seem to go on well. When it dries it chips and if I add another coat it seems like the new paint takes off the old. The only thing I can think of is I need a base coat of a different paint type that will stick better. I have a can of Testors white enamel spray paint that I could try but I don’t want to if its not going to help.

Please respond soon because I would like to start painting tonight.

Thanks,
Blake

Edit: Even though the lens I have isnt good for macro photography I can try taking a picture of the figure when I get home (Currently at work).

My advice to you is to first prime your figure with eihter Floquil primer or an automotive primer, this will give your figure good a surface for the paint to stick to.

Cheers
Roc. :)

Blake,

On my warhammer figures I use a base coat of primer, though I don't use the testors primer only use the gamesworkshop primers it gives the paint something to stick too.
I use Vallejos some myself on them and they work great!

I have heard that the Games workshop primer was good stuff. My only problem is I want to start painting tonight so I need a place locally to purchase a primer like Home Depot. What would be a good automotive primer I could get. I could go to home depot when I get off work.

Blake, I guess if you HAVE to paint get the automotive primer. When time does permit get yourself a can of the Games Workshop primer. I think it's the best figure primer out there. It goes on thin and does not obscure any fine detail that may be there.~Gary

I looked on the internet and could not find the games workshop primer anywhere. Not even on their website. I did however, find Floquil Figure primer on Michtoy.com. Would the brush or spary on be best?

Home Depot has a spray primer made by Rust-o-leum called "Painter's Choice". Is leaves a very fine coat. And its CHEAP, around $3.00 for a large can. The primer comes in 3 colors white, a darkish gray and black. I use the white because it doesn't "dull out" the colors painted over it.

Well, it was worth mentioning because that didnt even cross my mind. I think ill go that Rust-o-leum Painters Choice at home depot after work but if I cab find the Games Workshop primer ill go ahead and order it.

I have not used Floquil for some time. I believe the propellant was changed a long time ago (health and environmental laws and stuff) and the last can I had left a fine pebble-like texture to it.~Gary

According to one of the clerks at the GW store they don't mail order spray paint, only ship to their stores.
If you let me know where you live I could check the store index in the White Dwarf magazine to see if there is a store close.
When I am out of the warhammer primer I use the krylon primers, the grey and black are good I don't use the white.

GaryJD is right Neil at the warstore is a good guy and service is great!!
Don't know if any of those places I listed are near you,not familiar with Florida.
But hope it helps. ;)

Winter Park is pretty close. I think ill have to go there and take a look around. Also, Thewarstore.com is awesome. They have the Pegaso figure I got from Colorado Miniatures for 25.99 and I paid 28.50. They also have Vallejo and a lot of figures like Reaper miniatures which I have been looking at because they are cheap, detailed, and have many different races. I dont really play any wargames but since ill be painting some I think I might as well play.

Ya I play some myself, mainly Warhammer 40K but enjoy painting the variety of wargame figures; so many different subjects and the detail on some of them are really good.

Here is a picture of the figures I will be painting. This is one of my first macro photos so its not very good mainly due to poor lighting in my room. I am going to get the primer tomorrow. I ran the figures under water to strip some of the paint off but I still have a little bit to get off.

I guess it has all been said now but for the record I have painted hundreds of GW metal figures and I have never yet used a primer as undercoat. I use the ordinary GW paints (black, white or grey) brushed on as undercoat before I start base coating. I have never had flaking unless, (and here I think is your main problem), I had failed to wash the model thoroughly before undercoating. The casting oils/chemicals often form a barrier to paint adhesion.
