Thanks for your comments guys, they are always greatly appreciated.

I've now added all the equipment to the leather webbing and now I'm starting the oil washes.

Firstly I apply a darker red/ brown oil wash to the leather webbing straps to deepen the colour and add a slight sheen.

Secondly, I've added a slightly green/ grey oil wash to the tunic to make it different from the trousers.

The next step is to do the wood grain on the rifle in acrylics and then run a heavy wash of Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber over to simulate the wood finish.

Finally went over the webbing details with a very thin black oil wash and did a pin wash to pick up some of the shading.

The effect is subtle, which is what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil washes, I will try that. I am always worried that the wash will destroy the paint layer.
He is looking the bee's knee's.
All the best

Hi Bob,

I've been using this technique for years and I've never once had a problem with the white spirits or the oils affecting the acrylic paint base or the primer.

I usually use Josonja acrylics, but I've also used Vallejo and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

What I like best is that once the white spirits evaporates off the figure it immediately dulls the oil paint to a very smooth flat finish.

If you're going to try this technique, I suggest you approach it like applying a tinted wash, rather than painting. A tinted wash should allow the acrylic paint to show through but it slightly alters the hue of the base colour.

I typically apply a tint that is darker than the highlight colour and first apply it in the shaded areas. I might apply two or three washes into these areas and then one very thin wash over the highlighted areas.

It's not a perfect technique, but it works for me. Good luck with it Bob.

Hi Tony,
You've created a lovely looking piece here mate, nice stuff. I know what you mean about trying other things, have decided to also try some 1/35th tiger 1's from Dragon, but probably still involving some figures. Will come back to the bigger guys as well though.
Regards
Chris.

Hi guys,

Nearing completion now. The figure is positioned on the base, the groundwork is basically complete and now just a few finishing touches to be added, such as weathering the figure and dressing the groundwork with leaves etc.

Having taken a long break from figure modelling, I've felt as if I've got my mojo back on this figure and I'm now looking to tackle a few more subjects this year.

Good to see you've got your mojo back after the break, Tony. I'm still trying to shake post-WASMEx lethargy myself and struggling to pick up the brushes.
It's a beautifully painted figure, mate. Nice work! Looking forward to seeing what's next.
