I thought I would post this here also.

Today is just going to the mean dogs real quick. As a public service announcement I would highly recommend you use tools properly. I took my Dremel which has a broken drill bit and went to drill a hole to put brass rod in the foot of a figure to be able to hold him. Note I said broken drill bit. Seemed like it was sharp enough to do the job so why not.

Here is why not. The drill bit will no longer drill in properly. Instead it will skitter across a surface. Well enough, but let it be known you should not apply pressure to said drill while it is on high, because it will skitter faster.

How do I know these things? Well I found out by drilling into the figure and applying pressure and having the drill skitter to a soft spot where it could fully start drilling. Under my thumb nail. Yep it goes real deep real fast in tender soft spots. I have just stopped whimpering and crying like a little girl. My thumb is throbbing and my cats while initially startled and concerned by my antics are now snickering in the background. I kind of thought they where sadistic, now I know. George now has a huge grin on her face.

Moral to the story is DON'T drill with a broken drill bit, especially not while applying pressure, and most importantly DO NOT do this in front of your pet.

Just thought I would warn you all.

Ouch!
Carl.

Did you damage the figure much?:p
Makes me feel weak at the knees thinking about it, ouch! :mad:Brings back memories of the time I drilled straight through my finger with an air drill, the bit came out straight through the centre of finger and I had to get it removed at hospital.
The other thing was when I put a new swan morton blade on the handle, was sitting down in my studio chair, dropped the scalpel, went straight through my shorts and pierced my right testicle, another hospital job.
It’s all a bit of a dangerous activity
Cheers
Tommi

Mine went in the end of my thumb just under the nail and about a 1/4 inch. Still throbbing. And because of that I decided not to touch my models anymore today because all I could envision was dropping my scalpel. Now you've proven my fears have reason. Ouch and shiver at the image you've given Tommi. And no the figure hekd up very well although for some reason I have now lost interest in doing it.

Hope you are better now. I have gotten splinters under the same nail three times with just a few miniutes between, the pain almost makes one nausious.

But also its good to point out that you should never work with broken or dull tools. You will only gonna regret it. Also when using powertools, wear eyeprotection, especially when drilling metal and using the cutting discs.

Cheers

I have a small L shaped scar on my left hand from an X acto blade I was trying to cut a pice of plastic and the blade stuck so I applied force and then lost control of the blade. It buried itself between my ring and middle finger. The whole blade was in there all I could see was the handle. I thought for sure I hand nicked a vein or cut tendons. I pulled it out and slowly moved my fingers and hand and it all still seemed to work fine and thought it did bleed a lot the blade somehow missed the vein that I can see under the scar as I am looking at it today. I feel lucky I did not do more damage to may hand. That scar reminds me to be careful those things are sharp. :p

So far I have not made the mistake of trying to catch a falling knife with my lap. Just not worth it. I have plenty more blades and the floor and the carpet can take the stick better then I can. I am sure we could spend countless posts making ball jokes but I will refrain. ;-)

Holy Shite Tommy! That is just brutal.

I think we all have our share of modelin scars. I've pretty much got perma scars on my right hand thumb from carving on figures. Though anymore it has to really cut seep for it to hurt, it's my modeling calluses!

The worst one I did wasnt modeling related, but when shoeing a horse, the horse jerked his foot back (was a hind foot) before I could wring the nail off, and as a result got about 3/4" of horseshoe nail in my hand, in the meaty part 'below' the thumb. Talk about a mess, hand swelled up and stayed that way for weeks. Still finished shoeing the horse though :)

This only confirms that figure modelling is for tough guys :)

Looks like someone should market a new insurance policy.

Tommi - u wins hands down!
