Hi,

Is there anyone that can help me get on the Putty & Paint site?

It seems the emphasis on P&P is on fantasy, but recently I've become quite interested in some of the painting effects such pieces sometimes have, mainly with lighting. I'd love to learn about that and am thinking about how to apply some of it to historical pieces.

It seems one needs Facebook, a blog, or get an invitation from some existing member. I don't have FB and blog, but hope someone could help me to such an invite.I've seen quite a few fellow PF members on there, so hope this will work. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Ferris.

From what I hear P&P have tightened up how invites are done as it used to be that any member could give someone a code to set up an account. Now I believe it's more done on invitation from those who run it. Best bet is to forget about getting noticed for there and just be you. Show your painting on social media and be a member of the painting community. This may mean Facebook pages, being active in online groups, and going to shows throughout the year.

Good luck with your goal though (I'd love to be on there too but know I'm not to the standard yet).
 
Hi Adrian, unfortunately I can't help with the P&P account - it seems like quite an exclusive site.

I just wanted to mention though that I've been thinking along the same lines as you. Recently I've been admiring the way fantasy painters on P&P paint ambient light/OSD, as well as their imaginative basing. I think there's plenty of opportunity to incorporate some of these techniques into Historical figure painting. I'm toying with ideas myself for WW2 figures.

Interested to see what you have in mind and come up with (y)
 
It's a great site for purely photographs of figures, no techniques or other aspects of modelling covered. It does provide a showcase of usually excellent and inspirational photographs that anyone can refer too.
What I have noticed is that there are a number of artists on the site who have joined but have never posted a single image and a fair few who have only posted one or two.
Perhaps this is a reason that the organisers are taking more control of the invitation process. Because of the original method of invitational codes it's understandable that much of the membership has polarised around a particular interest group of painters.
As I've said anyone can access the site and if you see something you like, very often the named artist has a blog for further reference.
 
Just wanted to say that coming from a fantasy painting side of things, it's actually interesting to see the way historical painters create their pieces. Yes, fantasy painters often go for detailed bases which can often become quite over the top at times. But seeing the realism, attention to historical detail, and painting techniques that historical (and scale model) painters go to is easily as inspiring. We can all learn things from each other and it's fun to see the gap between the two closing.
 
Adrian Its more a picture book than a forum , with super reference inspiration, and is most definitely by invitation only .
But you will also find it difficult to get on the Virtual museum site too .

My take on these closed shop sites is that they eventually fail . the basement being a prime example .
Stick with Planet and get on facebook , make a few modelling friends and if your stuff is good enough you will eventual get noticed ; and you might even get an invite :rolleyes: who knows .:)

Problem is I don't do Facebook, blogs and social media; only PF. Not much time for shows either, unfortunately.
If that keeps me from P&P, that's a pity, but no biggie.

Thanks for your response Nick.
I have a couple of ideas, all WW2-themed, but want to start with a few guys standing around a fire in the snow. Have collected some photographic references and have been looking at how (2D) painters do this. Quite eager to try and will post the results.

You're right, it's mainly posting pictures and little discussion. Few WIPs either. That indeed reduces the value of being on there. Still think it is easier to communicate with members when you're a member. But if it's worth the quest becoming a member...not sure.

Hi Ron,
Picture book is good. I'm starting to wonder if it's really worth it. I like the discussion and WIPs here at PF, and P&P lacks that.
I don't do Facebook and will not start just to get on P&P. But hey, some of my models are in that Virtual Museum... Is that cool or what!? :)

Well you have done better than me as I have now't in the virtual M :ROFLMAO: which has a greater variety than PP in my opinion , I don't think Macalusa likes me :ROFLMAO:
 
I've actually been directed here by a painter who I've met through a group on Facebook. Though I'll admit, I only really post on two groups, my page, and my profile. Though through friends I've ended up talking and taking part in discussions with many who I consider to be amazingly talented. But I've also discovered painters I've ever heard of and have learned things I'd never thought of attempting (I'm from a background of GW but please don't stone me. I'm changing my ways and breaking bad habits).

I'm not saying you have to use Facebook to get noticed, but it's a way to widen your knowledge about miniature painting, brands, sculptors, and more. And the moment one of those you look up to compliments your work just makes you want to push yourself further.

Cool mini or not is a great fantasy/game website and also has a lot of SBS's and some of the PP people post on the coolmini site also and do SBS's.

Massive Voodoo is amazing for tutorials and inspiration. Not so much a forum but the things you can learn and the way Roman, Raffa, and Co put things across is excellent.
 
sorry late to the post . only way of getting an invite is putting your work out. there they will contact you from there.
