I am working on a Jaguar "Over the Top" British officer. On the back of the coat near the collar line is a diamond shaped patch. What is it and what color would it be? On his sleeves he has red triangles but I have searched the net but can't find any references to this diamond patch. Any idea's???

Jason,
After a bit of digging here goes. your figure depicts an officer of 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. The red triangle is the patch of the 29th Div. as already stated. It should be point up, some sculpters have made the mistake of following an illustration in an Osprey which shows it upside down.

The diamond on the back of the tunic is a company patch in the regimental colours which were Primrose yellow and Crimson.

This scheme worn by 1st Lancashire Fusiliers was illustrated by Mike Chappell, in Military Illustrated No1 in June 1986. His details gave the position of the colours as follows:
A Company - red left, yellow right.
B Company - red top
C Company - red bottom
D Company - red right

You can see the patch being worn here;

Hope this helps and if you have any mre queries please ask.

Roger.

Roger:
Thanks for posting the reference. I painted this figure several months ago, and just painted the diamond patch the same color as the tunic. I will make the correction this weekend. It did not occur to me that this was "insignia". So much for my weak research. Thanks again.

Mike

Hi,

A late post this but thought you may be interested (Roger) that the new Fusiliers' Museum in Bury, Lancashire is opening to the public on Saturday the 27th June 2009.

"The Museum will display and interpret the magnificent collection of the Lancashire Fusiliers and will be the home and focal point of the growing collection of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers."
