Remembrance

Hi All

Many of us model military subjects but I can't think of many instances of what soldiers become when they are no longer soldiers.

In this year when we "celebrate" the 60th anniversary of the ending of WW2, I thought it would be an opportune moment to try to depict one of the veterans who will be attending remembrance parades across the world this summer.

This was largely brought about by living with my father-in-law, a WW2 RAF aircrewman, who is an inveterate attender at remembrance functions throughout the year.

I haven't got much further that the basic head so far, but I envisage a beret, cap badge, blazer, medals and a regimental tie (oh, and a poppy, of course)

It's about 1/10th and all by eye (can't you tell :lol: ). Magic Sculp over a Sylmasta core.

This head looks very good to me. Nice facial features. An excellent idea for a figure. My step father is also involved in the yearly reunions. He was in the Battle of the Bulge.

Hey Phil....I like the look of this bust..he's got a really strong face and features...it just has that look about it that makes me think it will paint up really well.
I've been catching a lot of vet type programmes just lately, RAF, Commandos, SOE.. and those old boys, (and girls, god bless 'em) sitting there describing some of their actions in that 'matter of fact' way that only they can, fairly brings a tear to my eye..

Excellent idea mate.....carry on.

He'll be in my box. I've been fiddling with the nose and left eye a bit, and emphasised the folds under the chin. Think he'll be RTR - I like the regimental tie colours Got to get that far yet :lol:

Hello all

Been fiddling with this old geezer and have tidied him up a bit. Head is about finished now and just needs some spit 'n polish to sharpen up some of the wrinkles. Couple more shots herewith. Apologies for the poor photos. My camera doesn't have a macro so it tends to fish-eye when you get in close :angry: Should've bought the Nikon!!!

Hello Phil,

This is a great idea and a neat sculpt. Plenty of character.

As for the medals and the badge, IMO the best (easiest) way to go is photo-etching. Designing the medals is one thing but finding someone reliable to do the photo-etching for a sensible price is another.

I've shelved a couple of projects because of that. Needless to say, I'm waiting with anticipation to see how you do it.

Thanks for the comments. I have a method in mind using a paste made up from enamel paint and talc. The medal shapes will be made up from fine wire, including the suspension bars, and the medal built up using tiny amounts of the paste, applied with a toothpick. This is a method shown to me by John Regan (Euro judge and excellent modeller), and it works for him. Whether it will for me remains to be seen :lol:
