Hello Rompy, This is coming along great. Nice colors on the tunic. I really like the beard stuble, would you share the colors and your technique in how you produced it? Cross of Iron is one of my favoite war movies, and your painting of "Steiner" is very lifelike. Best of luck the rest of the way. Regards, SG:)(y)(y)

Thanks SG :)

With regards to the beard stubble, i used Jo Sonja Hooker's Green & Burnt Sienna. I don't really keep track of the proportions since I "eyeball" the colors till I find its to my liking :) By doing so, you will be able to get a variation of colors since the proportions are different. For this round, i wanted the stubble to stand out more, so only a little water was added to mix the 2 colors. You can use a tiny bit of retarder in lieu of water as well. I normally watch some war documentaries while painting and letting the paint dry in between.

The key is a brush with a sharp point. I don't think the type hair on the brush matters. I was using a cheap synthetic brush to individually "dot" the stubbles :p It was a size 2 brush since it can hold more paint. Multiple passes are required to build up the stubble. I work from top down to the chin, then chin up to above the lip.

Hope this helps :)

Starting on the feldbluse next :)

The base color is a mixture of Jo Sonja French Blue, Olive Green, prussian blue & cad orange :)

I would have never thought to go with two shades of blue to add to the olive green. It looks really good!!!!!!

Would you share the proportions of each color?

Hi Todd,

As shared in my response to SG's query, I don't have fix proportion to the colors used as i eyeball the colors till i am satisfied. Having said that, i can share how i arrived at the field grey. It's like cooking or alchemy :)

I started out by mixing the french blue and olive green. The result is a rather dull looking mixture but still lacking the darker shades for field grey. To that i added just a little Prussian Blue to darken it. (Ultramarine blue would be too bright) If you added too much Prussian Blue, add a little Olive Green to push it towards to green. You should be getting a dark blue-greenish mix. Finally add some Cad Orange to "kill"/dull the green to a slightly dark greyish color.

Hope my layman explanation helps :p

It's about trial and error. Overtime you will develop a knack to "see" the colors :)

Rompy ,

Great subject ..wasn't sure about this but its full of life and very close to Steiner ...love the approach to the flesh tones ...agree about more SBS info ......

Nice uniform colour ...and all those awards to do as well

Looking forward to seeing more from you on this

Rompy,

I understand your explanation perfectly. Thanks you for that. When you first listed the colors of the mix I could not see it in my minds eye. The ultra marine blue was all I could see.

I have to give credit to Enion, as he has always pushed me to mix my own colors for many years. I have been brave enough to "put a toe or two in those waters," and have loved the results.

I must thank you again for showing me something new!!!

Cheers,

Rompy, I hope you don't mind me saying but the eyes are looking a bit boss-eyed and they appear spooky or just plain wrong. A great help to me has been Sang -Eon and Mark Bennett on how to do eyes. Skin tones are spot on BTW :)

Working on the camo jacket :)
