I know Ron would usually sell a very limited number of his sculptures painted while the majority were just castings mounted on wooden base. I don't think many folks that collect his work would think to paint them.

Ron Tunison would usually paint a small number of each edition of a sculpture he would do. While I feel the painting looks well done lets not forget these were marketed as pieces of art and not as a figure/model kit. IMO out of respect for Ron's work I personally would NOT show painted pieces of his work at a figure show unless it was a piece painted by him. Just my two cents.

Why not?

Years back, I mentioned to Ron that I had his Lee Bust with a broken hat courtesy of my son. After finding the only way to fix it was the regular way (glue), I told him this could be the excuse I need to paint one of his works. He encouraged me to do so and told me to make sure it was sealed good before painting. Shortly after that his son entered some painted pieces of Ron's.
I would not reccomend painting his pieces in the National Parks though. There is enough painting on monuments going lately.

Mike, It's just a personal choice. Looks as if Ron might welcome such a thing. Likewise I can't imagine going in and adding additional figures to a Troiani or Rocco canvas print. It's already a finished piece of art be it a print or sculpture. That's just me.

Ron painted them and welcomed others to as well. If it ruins the piece than that's on the owner.

A shame he never did a few of his sculptures to be marketed as kits. That wasn't his thing though. I'd design a few larger scale Civil War figures but would only do so as one offs. I think it would be hard to find someone willing to produce it, and I doubt the compensation for such a project would be there to make it worthwhile.

Some of the 200mm WW2 sculpts seem to be popular. Not sure how the Rev War or ACW would go over in that scale. Might be interesting to find out. A light infantryman would be nice.

...It would be nice if you could bring these to display at the MFCA/APG Show this May at Valley Forge. Ron was a regular at the Show and I know people would really enjoy seeing these...

I second that, and encourage you to bring these along, if you come to our show. I'd like to see them close up, myself ;)

Prost!

Once again, superb painting!

All the best,
Dan

Hi Gents.

On vacation in FL and just noticed all the new replies. I didn't mean to start a controversy. I understand where some of you are coming from. I have been collecting Ron Tunison for years and have 14 of his pieces. His sculpting is exquisite and so life like. Although I never met Ron I was very saddened at his passing. I didn't think of painting any of the sculptures until I actually saw two that Ron had painted on display at the Horse Soldier in Gettysburg. I was awestruck at how beautifully they were painted and how the detail on these large figures just jumped out at you. Seeing his work made me want to paint one of my pieces so I decided to paint just one of them, Joshua Chamberlain on Little Round Top. I was so pleased at the way it came out I decided to paint others and I then was hooked. Out of respect for Ron I have done meticulous research on each piece before a brush has ever touched them and I was very careful not to just copy Ron's work. There are some marked differences, but I think they are painted very accurately. I would like to think that Ron would be pleased. Based on the feedback I have received here I have decided to bring a couple of the pieces to the MFCA Show because I don't think my photos do them justice. More so I am really looking forward to going to see the amazing work that you guys do up close and personal.

Len,
I am an avid collector of Ron's work and was very fortunate to meet him on several occasions, usually in Gettysburg at History Meets the Arts. That would be a great place for you to show your work as well. I am missing a couple of the bust and several other sculptures that I am still looking for but still plan to collect them all. I would be thrilled to display any of your work in my collection right along side the few I have that Ron painted. I personally think Ron would be very supportive of your work. He always seemed very humble to me and appreciative when people purchased his work. I really regret not getting a painted Jackson at Cedar Mountain as we had discussed. Keep up the great work and if you ever want to part with any let me know.
Craig
