As with previous open books from me I will look at each article highlighting parts that I liked .
Our first article is by SERGEY POPOVICHENKO
Roman Legionary 1st Century A.D
Sergeys choice a battle worn Roman using Acrylics and Oils he shares his obvious passion for the subject , adding a bandage to the wrist and what I was impressed by putting battle damage onto the shield and also the way he has achieved the blood effects on the sword. What will I take away well its the way he has painted the armour and of course that shield . The end result a stunning model and a great start to the book.
No 2 is by our good friend ERNESTO REYES STALHUTH
Knight Hospitaller, 13th Century
Ernesto is a long time contributor to the series and its good to have him sharing his obvious skill , this time paint that scary colour Black , needless to say the mixes for this have gone straight to my little book !!! I also liked the way he has described painting the insignia on the clothing and shield and the way this fellow looks really worn out , a really interesting read over the pages.
The 3rd article is by IGOR KORDYUKOV
“The Descendant of Odin”
This time we have something for the sculptors which shows how Igor goes about sculpting from a wire former to the actual completed sculpt and release by a manufacturer . This is a virtual SBS on all aspects and is packed with pictures on every page . For me I took away the sheer skill of the sculptor and a respect for the work that goes into producing a figure.
The 4th is from the new contributor JASON ZHOU
Hannibal Barca
Yes its a bust so I am happy , we have seen this superb version her on PF and of course in my review, what I have gleamed from the pages ..the flesh mixes as well as the way he has achieved the armour , and the textures ,very impressive but what really stands out on the piece is that leopard skin ..in the book as well!!! Jason says his technique is time consuming but wow what a result he achieves.
No 5 is from JUANMA VERGARA
Otto Carius
I am enjoying the pages again ...its another bust and again covering that devil of a colour black , this time on a large scale bust of a true legend in tank warfare , we have a nice write up of his career , there is a particularly good SBS on eyes and the tones of the flesh work so that is well worth keeping to hand . I have made a note also of the way the silver thread has been achieved as well as the Panzer pink piping , very useful stuff and well written.
No 6 is from that fellow ERNESTO REYES STALHUTH
Ensign 28th Foot at Waterloo
Not only is it a bust its from a Regt close to where I live what to look at in this article well 2 things for me the uniform red itself and that mass of yellow on the colour he holds . The way the folds and shadows have been achieved is great .and well explainedAs with busts the face is the main focus , get this right and it comes alive ...well ernesto certainly has done that in these pages.another fine bit of work,
The 7th article is by JAVIER GONZÁLEZ
Rhino Painting
This is a follow up article from SMH 15 when the actual sculpting was covered , this part deals with the actual painting ...short article but again full of ideas , what is amazing to a mere modeller like me is the way the skin effects have been done , the end result is really impressive.
No 8 is by
ADRIAN HOPWOOD
Twitchy Mary
This is the last article and by no means the least by a modeller I have had the pleasure to meet Adrian loves his fantasy pieces and it shows here we have a rather dangerous looking female with a rather large weapon , What I like is not only the painting but the way the artist has achieved the chosen colours particularly the pink . Not only is the figure nicely done but the same care and detail has been given to the base work ., another interesting article., I am glad Adrian explained the title as well!!!
Final Thoughts
This is another nice volume to add to the library as with all it is well written and presented by all contributors , colour reproduction is 1st class , quality materials are used for the pages themselves ,all this together with excellent customer service ..what more can you ask .....
