Howdy,
ok, searched the threads here, found 'Sculpting 101' by Gary JD, an excellent primer series.

Diving into the Amazon data pol for "figure sculpting" is a mixed bag.....too many answers!!

The most promising ones, once I get past laughing at the pilates/ weightlifting/ tummy, thigh & butt workout books, seems to be
Modelling the Figure in Clay, by Bruno Lucclesi
or
Modelling & Sculpting the Human Figure, by Edourd Lonteri.

Any other suggestions?
Gary's thread had some good books, but the didn't leap up on Amazon (maybe searchers goof, not the search engines goof)

And the thread did show an excellent set of human proportions, to keep anatomy "real"

As for the medium, I;ll try Sculpey, for the working time, with brass wire armature, as per his method. If it works, use it!!

Cheers

Thanks Gentlemen

Thanks for the leads so far.

Uruk-hai, that SBS is wonderful

Einion, going by what I am happiest with on my workbench, the preferred scales seem to be 75mm & 120mm for figures, and for busts 1:9 (200mm).
The reasoning being that I will have 'room to move', and wont have my head explode from trying 30mm scale.

True, the trade off is a higher degree of finish and realism is demanded, as the larger scale permits higher detail

warmest regards
