Sextant??

Hey, all -

I picked up the 1/10 War Front bust of a Kriegsmarine Warrant Officer. Reference the attached box art, what is that thing he's holding? I would expect it to be some form of sextant, but I have yet to find an example in any of my references or online. "Regular" sextants, yes - but nothing that looks like that.

SO - what is it? TIA for any help!

It's a bearing diopter, this model was carried by U-Boat crews afaik.

Maybe those who are familiar with a bearing diopter could explain its use, for those of us who aren't but are curious to know.

It's mounted on a gyrocompass and used to determine your own position, not sure about the exact technicalities.
