I don't normally do works in progress but I may need a bit of help on this one. I'm about 95% happy with my research but please jump in if you think I'm doing something wrong.

Just made a start on the face .

The hair and helmet just have a base coat so far and I have yet to do the eyes. Oils over acrylics. I'll pick out more detail with acrylics next week when the oils dry.

This chap has his saddle over his shoulder for which I've made some modifications. More on that next week when I have added a coat of primer.

Thanks guys.

The helmet was sprayed with Tamiya primer, Tamiya gloss black, Alclad polished Brass and finally future floor polish which is (if you don't know is a rather excellent water based gloss varnish). I'll go over it next week with Tamiya Smoke and some burnt sienna washes. It had a dent in the side which I filled.

Quick update

I removed a strap from the saddle pad. The one I left is from the stirrup leathers, more on those later. I've built up the back to give a deeper seat. I just have to add a few rings and fasteners plus the over the saddle girth strap and then it's paint time, I do enjoy painting leather, it's very satisfying.

Had another two hour session tonight.

Firstly added some ring fastners to the saddle and the over the saddle girth strap. I'll add further straps when it's painted and on the figure.

Stirrups and sword primered, Tamiya gloss black, Alclad Steel, then highlights with dark aluminium and polished aluminium. Next gloss varnish and shadows added with oil washes over the next few days.

Next I gave the figure a base coat.

Tamiya hull red airbrushed from below. Tamiya white from above followed by Tamiya red from above. I do this with reds as oils tend to be very opaque . Tamiya blue for the breeches. I'll start going over the figure with other oils tomorrow. That should take a week!

So any idea if it was wet or dusty at Balaclava on that day?

I did a bit more work on the saddle

It just needs a coat of semi Matt to level it, a touch up and the brass fittings painted.

The breeches have been painted. I'll add a Matt finish next week when the oils have dried. The yellow stripe has been roughed out for next week. I'll pick out some detail later with acrylics.

I've gone for subtle shading as I dislike strong contrast in large figures.

I'll work on adding dirt and dust at a later date with the airbrush.

Both these images show my "first pass", I normally go over everything several times with different techniques.

Tomorrow, sword and water bottle.

Tonight I did some work on the water bottle and bread bag. The poor lighting in the photograph doesn't do it justice. I need to play around with varnishes next week.

I've also started work on a pistol. Small percussion pistols were often purchased privately so again no standardisation.

I've decided to paint the scarlet coatee with acrylics after the breeches are dry and laquered next week.

Thanks for the good words guys. Please point anything out you think I'm doing wrong.

Certainly looking very good to me

Did you freehand the lettering on the water bottle ..very neatly done

Interesting you are going to use acrylics over the oils as well will you put a seal over the oils first ?

Following with interest

Hi Nap

Freehand for the lettering and I'm going to adjust the font a bit. I do fix oils with a lacquer before I move into the next stage for protection. I know some acrylics react badly over some paints, especially enamels so it's not worth the risk.

Andrew.

Just a quick update. It's at an " ugly stage". Lots of bits need tweaking. My models only come together in the last day.

I just have the gloves to paint and then I can Matt varnish everything and then assembly .

I will then be picking out fine details and metalwork including a lot more work on the face and a start on the hair.

I may tone the shadows down on the scarlet a bit. Not sure yet.

Comming along very nicely Andrew.
It's maybe just me but I like to see thee deep shadows on these larger castings.......we don't want the 54mm boys to have all the fun with extreme contrasts, I like the tonal weight you have painted into this fine Dragoons jacket.
Cheers
Keith
