Sir James ‘The Black’ Douglas
Sir James Douglas was the eldest son of Sir William Douglas, becoming Robert the Bruce’s most trusted captain during the Scottish wars of Independence. A ferocious warrior, he fought his enemies with an unmatched terror and ferocity, earning him the nickname ‘The Black Douglas’ by the English. Douglas was killed on campaign in 1330, most probably by the Moors, while carrying the heart The Bruce to the Holy Land.
