As requested by someone I can’t remember who forgive me, one 18mm AB figure selected as a start to finish subject, this is the officer from the Guard Horse Artillery set, it is a one piece casting.
I have put brief descriptions as captions on each photograph to hopefully clarify what has been done, the figure is pretty much as supplied but heavily cleaned of extra metal mostly around the boots, horse reins, sabretache and sword scabbard and hilt, I try to seperate them as much as possible as it makes painting easier.
I always paint with oils as it‘s so much easier, wet merging is a breeze and the paint is so thin that most colours dry overnight
I use AK interactive tube paint thinned on the figure with white spirit or in a bottle top with naphtha, I don’t varnish at all as I like the eventual satin or semi matt look of Oils
Click on images for larger view if required
Figure has been prepped with all filler metal removed and detail refined as far as possible.
Primed with Holts auto grey primer
White metal scraped back to expose bare metal that is then washed with a blueblack mix
Horse base colour done, highlights added and merged and black points added also merged
Off white markings and grey hooves, hooves on marked legs are lighter
Horse tack added
Horse eye added too
Gold areas washed with brown madder alizarin and then painted with AK interactive brass
Colpack painted black with a tiny bit of red added
Scarlet added over a crimson wash, it makes the scarlet richer and adds depth
Blue fraise added on the shabraque, indigo mixed with almost equal amounts of crimson
Indigo dark mix applied then a highlighted mix overpainted and merged, face done too
Dark sand graduated out to light on the leopard skin
Gloved hands painted a dark cream
Mid brown spots placed randomly then surrounded by three or four smaller spots in a very dark brown
Scarlet detail added to the bridle, cross belt and sabretache corrected, piped scarlet also added to gold lace edge on the shabraque
Light brown fur added to the pelisse
Last small detail added in white metal or yellow, final inspection against picture reference.
COMPLETED PIECE
Happy painting everyone...no matter what scale
