This is the figure that I’m currently working on. It is an officer from the Spanish Tercios and it is inspired by the picture from Ferrer-Dalmau, “El milagro de Empel” (Miracle of Empel). I attach a quote frome Wikipedia, it is worth reading.

The figure is commercialized by Getorix and it’s a joy to paint.

All is painted in acrylics. For the metal I used Vallejo ans Scale 75 metallic colors, Tamiya Smoke clear (with a touch of ak ultra matt varnish, as it is too glossy for this figure), Vallejo smoke and some whashes in black and brown.

I have to retouch a little bit the face as I’m not totally satisfied with it. I used the classic brown sand enlightened with sunny skin tone and light flesh, and black red for the shadows. Some tones with prusian blue and violet red.

Still a lot of work to do!
Thanks for comments and suggestions!

Very effective rendition of the metal. Please would you mind listing a little bit more of the washes - I'm always interested in learning to get better metal finishes.

Cheers

Hi Huw,
In this case the base color is a mixture of oily steel from Vallejo and thrash metal from S75. I made a couple of lights adding speed metal (silver) from s75 and a couple of shadows adding matt black.
Then I paint some layers with tamiya smoke clear, insisting in the darker zones. The more layers the older the metal seems. I like to add now some tones with smoke from Vallejo. While tamiya's is greyish Vallejo's is brownish, which adds very rich notes and seems rusty.
Finally I made a wash with pure black using Vallejo's wash, but only in the darkest parts, outlines, below the nuts...
The last touch is some silver in the borders and the nuts and some scratches with a line of black and a line of silver below.
That's it!

Great WIP, its really nice to see how your painting becomes art!

We hope you enjoy the miniature.
Great figure you have done!!! It's a pleasure to paint! I hope that you continue with releases like this!! :) My only concern are the spurs, I think they are difficult to handle and don't add too much to the figure so I decided not to use them :)

It really is coming on a treat. Many many thanks for sharing your paints technique for the metal - I'm going to try this out.

Cheers

We are glad that you like the figure, we would like see the progress on your painting.
Yes, certainly the spurs are really small and is difficult to work on that. We take note for future figures.

Thanks

This fellow is almost finished. I just have to prepare a small muddy terrain (like the picture of reference) and add dirt to the figure to integrate it

Thanks for watching!

Finally I managed to find some time to finish this figure. Taking as a guide the original paint from Ferrer-Dalmau I decided to prepare a muddy terrain. I used paper paste (which has the perfect texture for fresh mud), acrylics and glossy varnish.
I added some dirt and mud as well to the figure to integrate it with the terrain.
This is the typical figure that you enjoy so much that you don't want to finish it! (y)

Hope you like it! Critics are welcome :)
