Okay I have basically just started this. It was going to be my Acrylic experiment, but oils seem to seeping into the process again.
First try at Bronze and dark leather. Looks better in real life than pic

The shield and cloak so far. Will do some highlites and shadowing today

Took someones advice from a figure forum (Cant remember who or where) and bought a cheap crock pot as my dry box. Works very well and instead of weeks drying is in hours. I think he's looking okay. Unfortunately the camera shows all flaws.

I checked here and found a method to try. Buffed the metal then brushed on some burnt umber oil paint. Then brushed until most of it came off (looks like the center of the shield at this point and crevasses still had a darker look). Cooked in crock pot on low for a few hours with lid half off. Next morning painted with Tamiya clear yellow. I think it looks pretty neat myself.

Did some more painting. I wish I could do this better but I'm having fun and thats all that matters, I think.
Picture doesnt show it but wife and kids think the shadows and high lites are good. I'm still undecided.

Still like the armour

I am trying to decide how to paint the flesh tones as that part is comming up soon. Could anyone give me a paint mix to make a Mediteranian skin tone? I will use oils to do it but am unsure what to use. Thanks in advance.

Looking good, this is a classic figure to paint and not easy, you are doing a good job so far, keep going, I really do like the armour effect.

Have you strayed onto the dark side with that spitfire!? You will have some of the members boil over! LOL

I liked the work done on metal parts, maybe the pictures group, or fpstizoun very red and I seem to be very bright red. very nice painting of the shield --- but historically wrong as the project was Athenian and Spartan was not ---

I have a little touching up here and there. I'm not thrilled with the skin tones but for my second figure done in oils I don't think it is too bad. Enjoy, I know I did.

I'm not sure if the ground work is okay. I decided to mount the figure right to the base so there isn't much relief. My wife and son think it is fine, but they could just be placating the old guy so he wont pester them.

MINIATURE-ART I tried researching this more but maybe I just didnt ask the right questions or punch in the right query on Google. If you know a good site or book for me to look at I would appreciate it as my son got me a Greek Fokideas for Christmas. Thanks for the comment and for the pick up. I appreciate it.

enjoyed looking at your hobby bench layout, the kind of tools and products
you use.

And you said it, the main thing is to have fun. It is a hobby after all. There
are so many great references from that Ancient Period. I would suggest that
you Google Osprey Books and peruse their rather long list of soft cover
books on various historical periods with an emphasis on Uniforms and
weapons, equipment. And in the USA they are less then $20 a piece.

Hi, I got the nick name in my younger days of stupidity and just exactly like the cartoon character. Below is my work bench if you are interested.

And my library, of which about 90% of my mil refs are unpacked.

Unfortunately I have been doing mostly armour and aircraft so the figure info is lacking. I rely on Osprey quite a bit but could not find exactly what I was looking for. And the net didnt give me as much help as I had hoped. Also I know of no other figure painters or historically minded people in my small town so refs are difficult. Thanks for the confidence boost and help.

Thanks James for including the photos of your stash and your work bench
area. It looks really well organized. I'd say you have as much Military
aircraft reference books as I do. Like you, I started modeling plastic model
aircraft kits with WWI and then on to WWII. I still do some wheeled
armored cars from time to time. Not into the creepy crawley tracked
vehicles. Rather late to be getting into that specific genré.
