With respect to the soul power of these people

The ancient name was Kalydon, but after the occupation by the Venetians named Spinalonga (Long spine). He started in 1574 fortified by the Venetians when the Turks had occupied Cyprus and the Venetians understood that soon would turn and Crete. After the conquest of Crete in 1649 by the Turks, Spinalonga was still in the hands of the Venetians until 1715

The island was conquered by the Turks in 1715 and inhabited by Muslims. In the mid 19th century the number of inhabitants increased if the island was the birthplace of trade. After 1898, most residents fled the island. Since 1903 served as Leprosarium, where again the first 251 lepers (Cretan origin) to the foul side of first and secondly the transmissibility of the disease previously lived exiled and isolated from the local community, the remote outskirts of cities in places which are called "meskinies. The conditions were tough when we consider that there was no proper medication and the virus of leprosy was contagious and can not be cured. After over 1913 patients coming out from the rest of Greece and other foreign countries, increasing the number of patients in 1000. Spinalonga converted at the time to "International Leprosarium.
Today Spinalonga declared an archaeological site and restored buildings. It is considered a tourist destination for day trips and swimming. Spinalonga visited more than 300,000 people, a number that brings to five the first Byzantine - post-Byzantine archaeological sites in Greece. Nevertheless, some ruins, relics of other times left to remind these people. The book of Victorian gravestone Chislop put in quarantine! With reference center Spinalonga, the British writer Victoria Chislop wrote the novel "The Island", which attempts to break social prejudice, the position of the patient. The book, translated into 14 languages, making "snap" in sales "exceed" the 850,000

"Walking the path of Spinalonga, stopped and held his breath. From a hovel around you will hear the echo from a keen of a mother, a sister or a man sigh. Let two tears from your eyes and you will see millions of twinkling tears that watered down that road .... "

Epaminondas Remoundakis (Hansen's disease, a resident of Spinalonga)

Needless to write captions. Everything has a consistency at an everyday just full of life.

Spinalonga is a small island which is closed from the north bay of Elounda, Mirabello in the province of Lassithi Crete. Its ancient name was Kalydon, but after the occupation by the Venetians called in Latin "spina lunga" (pronunciation: Spina Lungi), meaning "long thorn". From this description and paraphrasing the island got its current name. Well fortified by the Venetians from both engineering and architectural and aesthetic terms the whole landscape which even today retains its beauty.
