I detest piracy (except figures in my model collection:D). I don't download illegal music or movies so I have no interest in recast models. But I have no problem buying a figure from a fellow Planeteer's grey army or an established member selling on ebay.
I searched ebay and found lots of people selling figures, especially from Asia using box art from major companies. But I have no idea how one can tell if it's a legitimate seller/figure or someone hawking recasts. I'm sure the new members here would appreciate the information.
If there's a previous thread on how to spot these fakes, I'd appreciate the link. Or your advice.
Thanks guys,
Mary

A big give away is normally a lower price than normal, sometimes up to 50% cheaper than what the original retailers sells them at, another give away is they sometimes state not in original box, although they will take the time to recast the figure they will not produce the packaging.
Also if its offered in resin and the original kit is white metal that can be another red light.

If it sounds too good a deal then normally its a recast, the only way they can sell in quantity is to offer the recasts at a cheap price.

One other thing that will give it away, is if the "box art" on Ebay or other sites, has black and yellow angled stripes down one side of the image or a different name as to what the original manufacture has. We all know who he is!
Or, when in doubt, don't buy it!
Cheers Jason

Mary, one suggestion would be to contact the original manufacturer of a figure you suspect to be a recast being offered for sale providing a link and ask them if they think it's one of their figures.

Roger.

I will second Roger on that. That is my first comment, when someone posts a thread to say he's found a copycat somewhere, and warns us not to buy. The original manufacturer, if he's still in business, has the best legal standing to go after pirates.

Prost!

By the way, I haven't found the old "Reporting Piracy" subforum yet, in the new-look Planet. Has it been moved, merged into another forum, or dissolved?

When I see a model on ebay that only has box art I tend to be suspicious. If I'm looking for a deal on ebay I'm hoping to buy a figure from someone's grey army (not from a dealer who is running his business through ebay). In this case, I look for pictures of the actual box, the actual model, etc. I also recommend seeing where the poster is located and using your best judgement.

If I'm going to buy from a dealer I tend to go with Red Lancers or Colorado Miniatures (since I'm in North America). Their prices are reasonable and I know what I'm getting. It might be a few bucks extra here or there... but it's worth it for confidence in what I'm buying.

Some red flags to look out for on ebay
1) Material... recasters will often offer what should be a metal model in resin
2) No box... many will say does not come in original packaging
3) Admits to being a recast... yes, some posters are up front and tell you their product is not original
4) Location... I don't want to be prejudiced, but some locations seem to have a high concentration of recasters

I'd say price is a yellow flag... if it's a dealer (selling lots of figures) and the price seems to good to be true, it's probably a recast. If it's a smaller time seller and it looks like they're just trying to clear out some space in their grey army, a good deal can be just a good deal.

I've bought a number of figures on ebay and following these rules has kept me safe from recasters. Thank you to everyone who makes the extra effort to not support piracy!

I answered my own question--the "Reporting Piracy" forum is now in the Specials forum.

Another idea Mary could be to post a link on here to the item you are thinking of buying-there are plenty of people on here used to spotting the Recasters.
If you PM me I have a list of the most common ones.

Things to look out for:
1) the seller doesn't state the name of the manufacturer
2) no pics of the original packaging
3) price is too good to be true
4) when asked with questions, seller pretends he doesn't know much

I would not buy anything from an eBay seller without asking questions
and for more pics. If you don't do this, you are asking for trouble.
And make sure to use a secure payment method such as PayPal so you
can get a refund when the deal goes south.

Taesung has a good idea. I'd ask for an actual picture of the piece before buying rather than the box art. On in some cases pictures pulled off a forum and used to represent the counterfeit. I'd also add the caveat that if its not the same when you receive it, the deal is off. This way everything is up front, no one feels mislead and there are no surprises and you have some sort of documentation if the refund is challenged.
My advice? Avoid e-bay all together. e-bay is no different than a pawn shop that fences stolen goods. While I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate deals, there are an equal number of bad ones. And e-bay tries to play a plausible deniability game when it comes to counterfeit items. So in the words of Uncle Joe...."no man, no problem". Don't buy off e-bay, don't get taken. The low price axiom of being too good to be true is a good one, but I have gotten better than e-bay deals at shows from estate collections, bundling groups of figures and offering cash, checking all the vendors in the vendor room at shows. There are all kinds of deals to be had if you take the time to look for them, there are stores looking to unload surplus or slow moving items and in some cases, guys just looking to unload some of the grey army and need the cash more than the figures. In some cases the figures have been cleaned up, started, or may not even be in the original packaging but they are the real deal and are being sold for pennies on the dollar. I also don't mind paying full price to dealers that come to shows (I get to save on the shipping, have the immediate gratification of having it in my hands and can open packaging to peruse contents and check quality), they have to make a living too and its good to see them prosper. As for mail order, the two I'd highly recommend are Colorado Miniatures and Red Lancers. Gotten good service from both and they are reliable and honest. If you want a deal at a show, bring cash. (Cash is the magic medium) It limits your spending to realistic levels and makes you look at what your buying and choose carefully. You save on the interest of the credit card, the merchant saves on the processing fee and added bs fees (like those spending points you get, the merchant pays for via some cards) he gets cash that is much easier and better for him (;)) and because of that most vendors I've run into will "deal".
I'm aware there are plenty of hard working and legitimate small business trying to use e-bay as means of marketing and income, but frankly, the preponderance of internet companies, the ease of setting up domains and the increasing use of social media sites like Facebook as guerilla style free web sites for selling goods, there is no need for me to hit e-bay.

The only problem with that is, there are people out there that will not give a s*** if the figure/kit is a recast copy or not and make it easier for them to find and buy one.

Jason

Keith, I apologise if you found offence in my post. However the "problem" is your wording.
Perhaps you could have said words to the effect of,
"Another idea Mary could be to PM a link to myself, Gordy or other members here to the item you are thinking of buying-there are plenty of people on here used to spotting the Recasters.
If you PM me I have a list of the most common ones.

Keith"

As a manufacture myself, I can only hope that one day that my figures are as popular as Alpine or Hornet. However, I don't want them recast either.

As Gordys thread says,
http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/reporting-piracy.37292/
and I quote
"The best policy is to not link them, we don't want to assist their business in any way.

-Note the seller for reference (do not post the name or link here)
-List and post the piracy victims (manufacturers) here in this forum category
After a list of victims (not links) is posted , the manufacturers, reporter can view this list you post and contact each other for the ebay sellers info and take action.
This accomplishes two things:
1 - You have info on a pirate that is selling, but you also aren't perpetuating the piracy by giving the pirates free advertising here.
2 - The onus is on piracy victim ( the manufacturer ) to make contact and take action with ebay, pirate, etc."
